My Six Millennium Development Goals Introduction In my analysis, I chose target 1 A, 1 B, 2 A, 3 A, 5 A, and 7 A because from my perception, they impact the society significantly and to a larger extend cover the other unmentioned goals. This analysis might not comprehend every aspect of the MDG; however, it covers the most crucial part. It is for this reason that I am forced to pick these six from the large list of MDG. The platform that led to the formation of the millennium development goals sought to ameliorate the lives of the societal poor. This is one of the eight goal goals set by the United Nation Council, in which they intended to make the world a better home for man. Various political governments develop policy, which aim at influencing societal growth. While this has been the practice, independent surveys the by the United Nations and the World Bank indicated that various communities had limited access to healthcare services, education, lavishing in poverty unsustainable environmental practices, and limited food among other issues (United Nations 8). The UN and World Bank have demonstrated a close relationship in responding to various societal challenges as well as developing mechanisms for tackling these problems. This essay intends to analyze six of the eight-millennium goals in terms changes that the society has recorded since the inception of the millennium agenda. Target 1 A/ Ending Extreme Poverty While the world most powerful countries boost of their economic achievement, some communities in developing nations lavish in extreme poverty. The stories about people living in extreme poverty are not only sickening but also heartbreaking. It is arguable that when a person lives in poverty, he or she is not able to acquire other necessities such as education, good healthcare among others. The World Bank and the UN have indicated that they have made incredible work in ameliorating the poverty scourge. If I were to assign a letter grade to this specific goal, I would give it an A. this is due to the fact that the United Nations shows efforts to eradicate poverty irrespective of the fierce financial crisis. The target for the extreme poverty MDG is to reduce the current prevalence by half. The UN report shows that many communities leaving under extreme poverty lacked essential needs such as water, food, and shelter. The aforementioned needs are critical to human existence. The progressive report indicates that the project would meet its deadline. Liberty activists contend that extreme poverty is an indication of deprived rights. Most governments are part of UN accord, which advocates for human liberty. Target 1 B/ Fight against Hunger Hunger hampers social and economic development because it influences the ability of an individual to contribute towards nation building. This MDG is critical to the future of the world because the liberty that the society claims to enjoy is evident through social interactions. Social theorist believe that the fabric that holds the society depend on human satisfaction. Unfortunately, hunger influences a person’s contribution to social growth. Factors, which limit individual independence, may attract social delinquency in meeting these needs. For instance, a hungry society may not be able to think beyond a means that would enable it to receive food. This means criminal activities are options that the community can adapt to fight hunger. The grade I would assign United Nations in this goal is A- since fighting hunger with the present financial and climate instabilities is hard. The target of this goal is halve the prevalence rate by 2015. The United Nations and the World Bank have contributed in reducing the prevalence of hunger by initiating projects that will empower the affected communities. The UN and World Bank have collaborated with the respective governments in the affected regions such as Sub Saharan Africa, funding sustainable agricultural projects in order to empower the society. The aim of such project intends to improve individual visibility in contributing to the national growth. Social theorists and other activists believe that such initiatives are bold because they give both immediate and sustainable solution to this challenge. In the past, UN and other NGOs bodies working with various governments, as the mainstreams body, gave food to the affected regions. Although provision of food to the affected ameliorated the conditions, the problem persisted. Presently, programs such as women empowerment through agriculture, building of water holes among other projects have enabled the affected communities to sustain their lives in future (United Nations 9). Target 2 A/Promoting Education Education is vital component of social, political, and economic development. Countries boosting of political stability, economic prowess, or social growth peg their success on policies that have promoted the acquisition of education. Historically, growth of powerful nations such as United States stems from its policies that promoted education. Education influence societal approaches towards development agenda. Nearly every approach taken towards improving the conditions of human life depends on education. It is evident that the economic, political, or social development would depend on the education scale of a given society. The urge to invent or improve the current social conditions would depend on the knowledge that an individual has accumulated. The letter grade goal I would give the United Nations for this goal is B because there is significant improvement on educational matters focusing on higher standards. The goal targets to double the current number of enrolment in institutions. The UN and World Bank have been supportive in funding programs that intend to improve mass education. Largely, the acquisition of education is a credible attempt towards fighting poverty. Provision of education is among the efforts, which aim at stumping poverty. Presently, many developing countries have received support from the World Bank and the United Nation in their attempts to promote education among the rural poor. The efforts aim at influencing education policies in these developing nations as wells as spearheading the funding and the implementation plan. Target 3 A/ Gender Equality Gender equality campaign is critical in promoting human liberty. The campaign does not only advance the rights of the marginalized in the society but improves the socio economic growth. I believe that this goal is crucial in advancing the dignity of women. In the past feminist took a centre role in campaigning for the gender equality. It is evident that marginalization of women in the society is an international concern. A B- would be fair for United nations in this goal since many drawbacks have come their way but irrespective, they have focused on realizing their objective. The goal targets to increase women participation in social, political, economic growth. A large population of women in developing nations has not been privileged to acquire formal education or ascend to leadership positions. The societal differences are manifestations that women are still living in the brink of marginalization. Attempts, which create equal opportunity for women, show the development scale of the society as well as the respect it has for human liberty. Presently, the UN reports indicated that programs aim at advancing or empowering women economically have influenced the societal perceptions propagated old traditions. Target 5 A/ Promoting Health The health report of the United Nations indicates that many developing countries are still registering deaths, which could be preventable if the healthcare provision in these countries were effective. For instance, child mortality rate in sub Saharan Africa is quite alarming compared to developed nations. The figures indicate that sub Saharan countries still register deaths that they could easily prevent if the countries had the capacity to support health insurance plan. For example, Malaria is a leading killer disease. Other diseases that have attracted the attention of the UN are HIV and Tuberculosis. Many developing countries operate in deficit budgets. Due to their efforts to provide best health services despite the present situation, United nations qualifies for a B in this particular goal. Their efforts are quiet unique and worth commenting. The goal targets to reduce mortality rate by half. The UN and World Bank have supported various healthcare programs. For example, the UNAIDS has initiated providing medicine to people suffering from HIV. The campaign against the scourge of the disease has been directed towards every individual in the society. The programs have sought to educate the society, support the infected through provision of medicine, food and social help. The provision of food and medicine to the HIV patients has been a challenge to most developing countries. The programs developed through millennium goals have been instrumental in reducing the prevalence of the disease. Other successful programs initiated through the health goal include the campaign against child mortality and the fight against poverty. The provision of health care services does not advance human rights but improve sustainable socioeconomic growths. Target 7 A/ Environmental Sustainability Environmental sustainability is another millennium goal, which is critical to the future of the world. The developed countries have contributed immensely in polluting the environment. On the other side, citizens of the developing countries contribute to environmental degradation through practices that aim at generating income. The goal targets to reduce environmental degradation practices by half. From my perception, very little has been done to care for the hostile environmental hazards especially the present state of global warming hence as a result I would give United States a D+ in this goal. While the agenda does not criticize attempts that aim at raising income, it roots for practices that will enable the society to consume the natural resources in the future (United Nations 18). Preservation of the limited natural today promotes sustainability of future generations. The UN and World Bank have contributed towards the success of this program through supporting initiatives, which aim at promoting sustainable environmental activities. Conclusion This research has revealed that the millennium development goals aim at improving the present state of human liberty. Although the developed countries boost of various strides they have made, many developing nations are unable to support the needs of their citizens. The implementation of the MDGs has transformed lives of various communities in terms of provision of essential needs, which promote human liberty.
