Think Global Act LocalThe Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are specifically 8 global development goals, which were established after the Millennium Summit of the UN back in the year 2000. All of the 193 member states of the United Nations strive to fulfill these goals, the United States included. The countries either do this through their governments or through the organizations set by individual citizens. This paper has selected three community organizations in the United States to review how the organizations are trying to meet at least one of the UN Millennial Goals by stating their missions, goals and explaining how their goals are being realized and how nurses can be involved in the projects.
The three organizations are the Ali Center, Philadelphia Fight and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The Muhammad Ali Center refers to a multicultural center with an award-winning museum, which is dedicated to the life of Muhammad Ali. The center captures the inspiration based on the account of Ali's life and the six main principles, which fueled his journey. The goal of the center is to preserve, as well as share the ideas and legacy of Muhammad Al, to encourage respect, understanding and hope and to inspire children and adults everywhere to try and be as great and prominent as they can (Ali Muhammad Center, 2014).
The way this goals is be realized by the agency is by developing impactful programming serving adults and children, reaching individuals of all nationalities, cultures, geographic areas and ages (Ali Muhammad Center, 2014). Nurses can be involved in the planning of their activities, for examples, the ones that promote giving to present voluntary giving without anticipating anything in return. These is the work that most nurses do by helping others voluntarily. Nurses can also be assisted to help others develop their self esteem by helping them value themselves.
The next organization is Philadelphia FIGHT. This is an all-encompassing AIDS service agency, which provides primary care, advocacy on potential vaccines or treatments and consumer care (Philadelphia FIGHT, 2014). The main goal is to provide care to HIV/AIDS through offering a wide range of prevention, education, as well as information services such as AIDS Library, Project TEACH, Critical Path AIDS Project and the Youth Health Empowerment Project (Philadelphia FIGHT, 2014). These missions are also how its goals are being achieved and the agency can be really assisted a lot with the introduction of nurses into their program (Philadelphia FIGHT, 2014).
For instance, a nurse can be brought in to assist in the Project TEACH, which basically teaches people who to live after developing AIDS and also how to prevent themselves from catching the virus. The final organization is the American Association of University Women (AAUW). This organization promotes equity and education for girls and women. Their mission is to advance equality of girls and women through education, advocacy, philanthropy and research (AAUW, 2014). What the organization has done to realize its mission is spreading itself into different universities in the United States and areas where education is not female education is not widespread to advocate for the education of more female adults and young ones (AAUW, 2014).
What nurses can do in such an agency is being used as agents to advocate for the education of these females. Nurses themselves are learned people and they can be used as role models for these girls.ReferencesAAUW. (2014). American Association of University Women.
