A Personal Nursing Philosophy One has always affirmed that nursing is such a challenging, yet rewarding profession. It is challenging in terms of being directly responsible and accountable for attending to the health needs of patients. Theoretical knowledge has made one aware that contemporary concepts in nursing emphasize holistic nursing care and patient-centered approach, among others. One’s personal nursing philosophy therefore confirms the competency and effectiveness of nurses to address the holistic needs of patients: not merely catering to health requirements, but being able to attend to emotional, cognitive, physiological, cultural, and spiritual needs.

One’s personal belief is to be able to accord genuine patient care through therapeutic communication, as well as in accurately discerning and assessing the patient’s comprehensive needs. This is most crucial in elderly patients or those from other cultural orientations where language could be impaired or not easily comprehensible. Through vital signs, body language, and non-verbal modes of communication, effective and dedicated nurses must discern the most imminent need of the patient that needs to be urgently addressed.

Nurses should be cognizant of the fact that patients provide various signs, symptoms, and communication patterns that would help relay accurate diagnosis of their illnesses. As a nurse, one strongly believes that a more comprehensive and holistic approach to patient care must be provided to ensure that patients are accorded with opportunities to improve their health conditions and to live happy, productive and rewarding lives. Only then could nurses likewise affirm that this profession is indeed virtually similarly rewarding.
