Download file to see previous pages Dietary and nutritional management is fundamental for the prevention of Type 2 diabetes and the effective management of Type 1 and 2 diabetes (Feinglos & Bethel, 2008). NICE guidelines provide information to both the healthcare professionals and the diabetics that are necessary for the determination of healthy dietary choices (Feinglos & Bethel, 2008). Nutritional management is effective for diabetics, and in the prevention of Type 2 diabetes, in the terms of lifestyle and dietary interventions and weight loss (Feinglos & Bethel, 2008).

Carbohydrate is considered the main nutritional intervention for glycaemic control in diabetics with Type 1 diabetes. Additionally, adjustment of insulin to carbohydrate intake is critical for diabetics using multiple daily injections (MDI) and continuous subcutaneous infusion (CSII). There is also a nutritional recommendation of consistent quantities of carbohydrates for diabetics who are on fixed insulin regimens (Feinglos & Bethel, 2008). On the other hand, a daily increase in exercise and other physical activities is healthy, and assists in glycaemic control (Feinglos & Bethel, 2008).

NMC Code of Professional Conduct
The registered nurses and other medical practitioners play critical roles in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. However, they are guided by strict codes of ethics and standards of professionalism as provided for by the NMC code of professional conduct. They are required to respect the patient as an individual, cooperate with other members of the medical team, obtain consent before giving treatment, protect patient confidential information, maintain professional knowledge and competence, provide a high level of standard practice and care at all times, be trustworthy, promote the interests of the patient, and act ethically to identify and minimize patient risk. According to the code of professional ethics, the nurses and other medical practitioners are accountable for actions and omissions made in their lines of professional duty and practice and are bound to justify decisions.

The National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetics
The NSF set out services in England to ensure that there is coordinated care for the reduction of new diabetes cases, and providing better care and services to the diabetics in the UK, by 2013. The NSF also rolled out a strategy to develop, implement and monitor healthcare services for the reduction of the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the UK population (Burden, 2002). Diabetes UK also strategized towards addressing the growing obesity rates in England, through welcoming the publication of the Department of Health’s report, entitled Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives. The NSF ensures that all nurses are able to practice at least the basics of diabetes care through the setting of standards, where the nurses plan their services per their location and suitability to the population (Burden, 2002).
