Personal ment My is Zeyi Tao from China. I am in my fifth year in the of Lowa undertaking three majors in math, computer science, and actuarial science. I find these courses interesting since they are very similar. My interest in mathematics started since my high school years. I was involved in a national wide competition in mathematics in 2010 while still in high school. Thus, after high school, I embarked on math study. Two years in two UI studying mathematics, I realized I needed more challenge. I needed a course that could incorporate empirical evidence and not just mere calculations involved in mathematics. Personally, I find it thrilling to identify concrete ideas, which are empirically proven. Therefore, I felt a bit disappointed since mathematics applied only theoretical unproven ideas and I had no idea where to apply such theories in the real world. I still loved mathematics but I needed to find another more useful and concrete course. This idea came to my mind during my second year in college. Most of my friends began their internships that summer and that made me think hard about my future. I knew that pure mathematics could not help me find a job in the industry, thus, I commenced my study on applied mathematics. One of my roommates suggested to me that I undertake actuarial science, since it could enable me to apply the mathematical skills I had learned. One year of studying fundamental statistics equipped me with the knowledge of mathematical finance, life contingencies, and derivatives markets. Knowledge of the derivative market was fun for me since I got excited when I got stocks and options price by incorporating my mathematical skills. UI is one of the colleges in the United States with the best Actuarial Science programs in the United States. Most of the students undertaking it are graduates from other degree programs. Thus, sometimes one feels undermined by such classmates and it becomes hard to learn. In fact, I did not do well as I expected though I passed all the exams in that unit. I felt so excited to use this newly acquired knowledge thus I registered an account in option house with some money that my parents had lend me. I invested it in both the stock and the option markets. It was very disappointing to lose that money in three months, and I questioned myself on why this happened. I had counterchecked the theories, formulas and the financial model before investing and all was promising. Thus, I could not understand how I lost my small amount of investment in just three months. This was a big lesson for me since it made me understand that it is impossible to go against the whole market. The market is vast and competitive beyond my level of imagination and it was quite impossible to achieve much alone. I also discovered that it is important to keep informed at all times. Thus, I always read news from yahoo programs, watching online economic programs, and attended various forums. While undertaking computer science two, which is a major requirement, I thought about using software that could assist me in the stock market. I knew there was a lot of such software worldwide, though I wanted to create one that was fit for my requirements. I used various programming tools including Matlab at that time. The final project for this unit was to create a sample search engine using Java. I conducted such an impressive search engine that opened doors for me. I achieved to things at a go: I was able to develop a search engine about the stock market that I was determined to achieve from the start, and I was to complete an impressive project for that unit. Summer 2014 was another breakthrough for me since I assisted my friends to work on the development of a phone app. We named the app ‘IC bus tracker’, which is an app to search for a bus, locations, and accomplishing other functions important in Iowa City. UI provided an official app but we could create a new version using the android platform. It was a fun and a learning experience. After that experience, I decided to take a vacation and reflect on all the knowledge I had gained and the impact it had on my life. I climbed to the tallest peak of Mount Whitney, California, visited San Francisco bay area, Silicon Valley, university of Stanford, Google and apple. After this vacation, I was so motivated and psyched that I chose my third major in computer science. Visiting Google and Apple was my main point of motivation. In my first year of studying computer science, I did not have many ideas on the topic. I studied various courses including the database system, fundamental programming language, and topics in other topics in the computer science. Form my experience in app development; I came up with many creative ideas about app development since I believe it can go a long way in changing a lot of people’s behaviors. I read extensively on different fields of Computer science and I am now more interested in software development and computer interactive. In my five years of study, there are two people that I owe my success to. They have held my hand and encouraged me whenever I was about to give up. One of them is Professor Hao Fang and my upper-class man who is currently undertaking MIT. They encouraged me not to be afraid of trying new things. I love practice and I cannot help but wait to put the skills I have learned to practice in real life. I have learned a lot in the five years and I can be a professional several areas including statistics, computer science, math, and finance (Stewart, 30). However, before that, I am determined to further my studies in your school. I am aware of the reputation of this school and the testimonies from several alumni have also confirmed the same. I know that the school has the best faculty and this will go a long way in assisting me in my software development and computer interactive.
