Extract of sample "Carolina Panthers"

Topic: Carolina Panthers

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Carolina Panthers

Central Idea: The Carolina Panthers are one of the biggest football teams in the United States, and the only football team in North Carolina. As such, it deserves to be talked about in this speech.

INTRODUCTION

Attention-getter: Reference to the roar of the spectators in the Panthers’ stadium, its most famous victories, and its teams’ appeal among Americans.

Relevance to the audience: Most of you have heard of the Carolina Panthers, support the team, or know people who do. You may have watched the Panthers play on TV or bought their merchandise.

Credibility material: I developed a keen interest in football, and the Carolina Panthers when I lived in North Carolina and experienced first-hand the passion and emotion that football drew among its fans. Gradually, I took time to learn the game and eventually became a fan of the Panthers, since it was my “local” team.

Preview of speech: Today, I’d like to tell you about:

  1. The history of the Panthers
  2. The culture of the Panthers
  3. Ownership and administration of the Panthers.
  4. Team records

(Transition: Let’s begin by looking at the football scene in North Carolina before the formation of the Panthers. . .)

BODY

  1. Football has always been an important part of North Carolina
  2. The development of football in North Carolina.
  3. How football is perceived in North Carolina.
  4. The future of football, and the Panthers, in North Carolina and America in general.

(Transition: When you think of “Mexican food,” no doubt you think of corn products. I was surprised at the foods I hadn’t heard of when I lived in Mexico. This brings me to my second point).

  1. Football, and the Panthers, plays a big role in the life of North Carolinians.
  2. Football generates a lot of revenue, which contributes to the economy of North Carolina through taxes.
  3. The Panthers and their affiliates create employment opportunities for North Carolinians.
  4. The Panthers employ many people as casual and professional workers.
  5. The Panthers’ affiliates (fast food companies, sponsors, and communications companies) exploit their relationship with the team to create employment and cultivate and practice CSR.
    1. The Panthers have community service programs regularly in a year.
    2. The Panthers and their affiliates conduct charity programs on a regular basis.
    3. The Panthers provide North Carolinians with a vital sense of identity. Although it may appear trivial, states need a sense of identity, and there is no better way to acquire it than through sports. Almost all states have sports teams that not only they, but also other states, identify with.

(Transition: We may think of corn as an all-American treat, especially here in the middle of Missouri farm country. However, let’s look at how it symbolizes Mexico even more.)

III. The Panthers will be an even bigger part of North Carolina in the future.

  1. The team is only 20 years old (one of the youngest) but has managed to gain massive support in and outside North Carolina.
  2. Despite its relatively young age, it has a large valuation ($1 billion); larger than some of the oldest teams in the NFL. This is proof of its rapid development and growth.
  3. The team has won many honors since its inception, and it is realistic to say that it will win the Super Bowl and many other national awards in the future. This will only serve to elevate its status among in North Carolina, America, and globally.

(Transition: Now, let’s review what we have learned today.)

CONCLUSION

Summary statement: Today, we have discussed the history of football in North Carolina, the Panthers, and their contribution to North Carolina.

Audience response statement: It is my sincere hope that this speech has inspired a new and better appreciation for football, the Panthers, and the role they play in our lives.

WOW statement: The next time you watch a Panthers game on TV, in the stadium, buy their merchandise, or interact with them, know that you are sharing your time with a valuable and committed team that is rich in history.
