GOAL MENT After graduating with a bachelor of science in psychology, I saw the need to pursue my master’s degree in mental health counseling. This is after noticing that each day, I saw many people from my homeland country surviving numerous psychological disorders such as posttraumatic stress and depression disorder. With proper qualification in mental health counseling, I believe I can change people’s lives, irrespective of their background. After completing my master’s degree, my next step would be to look for an opportunity to gain experience within a non-profit organization that deals with mentally challenged persons.
The ultimate goal is to start and operate a non-profit organization in the future to carter for the increasing number of mentally challenged persons. When I arrived in the United States, uttering an English word was a problem. My first years in college saw below average performance in GPA. However, after hard work and commitment, I have mastered English language, both written and spoken, managing English score of 3.5 in my final undergraduate results.Overall, I have obtained quality education as well as a professional job.
In fact, during my first year at the Columbus State Community College ESL program, I became an English tutor as a second language. During this time, I noticed the value of embracing the task of helping other students to ensure they acquire appropriate and effective instructions throughout the school years (Abbott 239). Even though I took my high school and elementary education in the Ethiopian refugee camps, attending my higher education in the United State was not just a challenge, but an opportunity to explore and acquire more knowledge.
As a community organizer in Somali in Columbus, Ohio, I wrote three books in Somalia. I also did the translation to Somalia essential documents for Columbus Public Health. Because there were no health books in the public libraries, I tried to write the books, which are now available in the U.S. Library of Congress. The books are also available globally, in countries like Norway, Sweden, England, and Finland.I got my first job as a medical assistant after graduating from the American School of Technology, and have been serving under the faculty for the past eight years.
I am also a translator, clinical floor supervisor, and coordinator, for five years, at the Columbus Health Department Immunization program. I am a volunteer in the non-profit international organizations, Somalia Community Association and the American Red cross. I volunteer in a service project of the Red Cross to motivate people to donate blood, and in the Somalia Association in health fair sensitization to check their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. It is my pleasure to serve the community that I have known for the last eight years.
My experience in working with the community motivates me to continue with the same work environment after graduation. I’m an excellent team player, knowledgeable and dedicated to continuing serving the needy people within the society. My search for a well grounded university to do pursue a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling has landed me to Walden University. After reviewing university accreditations, faculty members, and curriculum, I identified the university as among the few that offer good online education to students across the globe.
Walden Universitys flexible programs will also fit my expected time schedule.Works CitedAbbott, Marilyn. 2000. Identifying reliable generalizations for spelling words: The importance ofmultilevel analysis. The Elementary School Journal, (2000), 101(2), 233-245.
