However, having gone through each stage, one at a time, I realized that the path before us is straight and smooth if we remain firm in achieving our goals. The first step involved choosing the research topic. This was one of the most difficult stages because I needed to select some area which I was comfortable with. At the same time, I wanted something interesting and some topic that would make a difference in my life. I wanted something that could add value to my perceptions and give a boost to my career.

I came up with several ideas; I discussed it with my supervisor, and I discussed with some friends as well. Motivation of employees has always fascinated me because I keep wondering how people work endlessly with one organization. What is it that holds them to one organization? I had also read about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and the issue of employee motivation was simply fascinating. However, this was not sufficient and I need to narrow down the scope of the research. I had to decide on one particular sector because employee motivation has become such an important issue that it has practical implications in every sector.

I again got down to brain storming and decided on the retail sector. I had been visiting the retail stores and I would often feel sorry for the floor staff that had to wear a smile even when they are unwell. I know how the retail stores have changed the lives of the people. I also realize the importance of retail stores in our life today. Thus, the motivation for the research topic came from a desire to understand what holds people to an organization and since the retail sector has been fascinating, I decided to understand and evaluate the motivation policies used by Tesco to retain its employees.
