In the U.S., obesity is almost an epidemic with nearly 65% of the adult population being estimated to be either overweight or obese (Hedley et al., 2004). The rapid economic and social changes that have occurred in China and other developing countries have also been associated with changes in diet, physical activity and health. Higher fat diets, and high incidence of obesity are found among lower-income and rural Chinese as well (Wang et al., 2006). Global availability of cheap vegetable oils and fats is one of the reasons for the observed increase in fat consumption among low-income nations (Drewnowski & Popkin, 1997).
Consumption of fast food is associated with higher caloric intake and the excess calories consumed will contribute to obesity, excess sodium intake, and higher saturated fat intake as well (Lin & Frazao, http://findarticles.com). The science of nutrition has changed significantly in recent years, and information on healthy eating, wrong diet and its health effects is readily available in magazine articles. People have more access to the Internet, print media, and TV for nutrition advice than before. Public health initiatives of government institutes also offer information on low-fat foods e.g., the Obesity Education Initiative of the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute in the U.S. (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/obesity/lose_wt/lcal_fat.htm). According to the report when people try to identify a meal that is easy and quick, fast food becomes the option or the solution. This is because they are cheap and have become the casual atmosphere even among the majority of Americans. Americans consume fast foods daily. It is not a guarantee that fast foods have to be unhealthy, however, in most cases, they become unhealthy because customers consume those with more fats; sugars; sodium, and calories with little minerals and vitamins.
This trend tends to lure many people to consume foods without knowing their health content. Notably, consumers like going for efficient, low prices services in restaurants. Sometimes an individual may be in need of quick meal because of limited amount of time.
It is because the removal of fat intake also meant the reduction of calorie intake because fat provide 9 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram from protein which is the good substitute of low fat diet to fat (American Heart Association, 2004).
A free market situation translates to mean that the government has given reign of the market to the business community. In this situation, the market tends to operate without any government oversight. However, in the pro-regulation scenario, a set of policies are enacted by the government that seek to influence, or rather control, the behaviour of persons, firms or organisations in relation to the economy.
