Introduction: The study of the human resources management of any company provides with the management systems that enable the company to perform its activities and motivate the organizational employees to improve and work better towards fulfilling the objectives of the company. Human resource management is the department of an organization that deals with humans or the employees of the organization. The managers of the human resources department are involved with the employment contracts and relations with the employees of the organization. They deal with the hiring of new employees depending on the labor law of the nation in which the company exists. Also, a study on the human resources activities of a company provides with the knowledge of any form of trade union that is followed by the company’s members. The current study focuses on a local company in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi Media Company, and studies the human resources management of the company focusing on the company’s background, vision and mission, its employment relations and contracts, the implications of UAE Labor Law for hiring new expatriates employees for the company, as well as the nature of the role of trade union in the company if it exists, and understanding the role and benefits of a trade union. 2. Abu Dhabi Media Company: An Overview: Abu Dhabi Media is one of the media companies in the Middle East located in Abu Dhabi in the UAE. Its activities involve multiple functions performing in different platforms of the media. More than 20 brands of the media are managed by the company and these include television, radio, publishing, games, digital media, printing, as well as other broadcasting media. There are a number of subsidiaries working for the organization that include leading companies in the field of media like Imagenation Abu Dhabi, LIVE, United Printing Press (UPP) and others. The three main divisions performing the functions for the company are the Broadcast, Publishing, and the Digital Media. These operating divisions perform together towards achieving the goals of the company and aiding in the functions of several media companies including different channels of the television media, channels of the radio stations, newspapers, magazines and some of the popular websites as well (Our Company, n.d.). The primary aim of Abu Dhabi Media Company is to become the leader in the media industry in the region from the viewpoint of business, modernization and involvement of the viewers. The main focus of the company is in the development of its quality and in newer innovations. The company believes in improving its content which is the most essential component of the technological advancement as the company believes it to be. Thus the strategies of the company are focused towards involving the advanced technologies prevailing in the market. Thus the vision and missions of the company can be seen to combine the skill and knowledge of the organizational members, the advancement in technology, and development of market segments searching for newer opportunities and modifications. Development of advanced games is another major objective of the company (Abu Dhabi Media Company, 2011). Thus keeping in view the goals and objectives of the company, the management of Abu Dhabi Media and its team of human resource management determine measures to be implemented towards successfully leading the industry. 3. Human Resource Management at Abu Dhabi Media Company: Abu Dhabi Company has a team leading the human resources department and looking after the factors and activities of the employees towards achievement of their goals and objectives. Saeed Hamad Al Dhaheri is the director of the human resources department at the company. He looks after the operations and functions providing with the proper decision making and leadership for the successful implementation of the strategies of human resources, the innovative measures following appropriate rules and regulations of the company. The team also maintains development programs for its employees such that they are motivated and encouraged towards improved performances and activities. The teams of the human resources in the company are divided into junior and senior teams where the senior team focuses on the management of the functions and welfare of the organizational members as well (Saaed Hamad, n.d.). 3.1. Company’s Employment Contracts and Relations: The employee relations of the company are maintained by the human resources team where the different issues related to the manager-employee as well as employee-employee relations are focused to be kept reliable and dependent on the rules and regulations of the company’s policies. As per the contracts and policies of the department, the human resources team also provides assistance in decision making of the company in regard to the company policies, business strategies, programs, and developmental programs for the employees as well. Thus the HR team provides with the suitable advices as required for the company’s improvement. Based on the performances of the organizational employees, different measures of investigations and corrections of disciplines are also involved in the system that are focused on the resolutions of any kind of problems or disputes that might arise among the employees or in the performance of different activities. Moreover the team provides the managers and the higher authorities with the suggestions regarding the disciplinary system of the organization along with the counseling of employees and managers on employment issues (FOUAD SAAD’s Overview, 2010). 3.2. UAE Labor Law and Abu Dhabi Media Company: The UAE Labor Law presented alterations and implementation of new measures in the year 2011 that increased the flexibility in the local industry increasing the movement for expatriate employees for organizations. The modifications are expected to have implications on the organizations’ plans for hiring new foreign employees, particularly in the UAE and regions of Abu Dhabi. The main purpose of the new law is to have lesser control of the employees on the employers of an organization. The new rule provides the facilities to the employees to change their jobs once they fulfill their employment contracts, without the need for assent from the employer which was not the case earlier when the employee needed to get a no objection certificate from the current employers in order to change his job. Moreover the new system provides for greater protection for the employees. Also, the residency visas for the employees staying out of UAE would require the current visas to get expired. The flexibility brought about by this new policy tends to increase the levels of productivity for the organizations like Abu Dhabi Media in UAE. The new rules enable the organizations to have access to the local market that was previously not possible owing to the lack of foreign expatriates. Now the existing employees would be more accessible rather than companies trying to spend more on hiring foreign employees. This is turn would improve the labor market efficiency of the company in maintaining its position in the industry. Also, the UAE market is expected to become more employee friendly with the implementation of the new rules and policies of the UAE Labor Law (Michael Page consultants can make it anywhere in the world, n.d.). Thus from the above studies, the employee relations of Abu Dhabi Media can be understood as well as the implications of the UAE Labor Law that has modifies currently. The new labor law can be understood to aid in the company’s hiring of employees improving the functions of the organization. 4. Trade Union and Abu Dhabi Media Company: The Abu Dhabi Media Company does not represent the presence of any trade union among its organizational members working in the company. In this regard the role and benefits of a trade union could be studied to understand how a trade union might prove to be beneficial for the company if the workers follow and maintain them. 4.1. Trade Unions: A trade union primarily refers to an association of organizational employees within an organization that work towards the welfare of the employees and hence bring out the different issues arising among the employees trying to resolve them for the betterment of the company and its objectives. The primary intentions of such associations are to look after the lives of the employees and any kind of difficulties that they might be encountering in the workplace. Thus it regulates and formulates policies to maintain a relation and understanding between the employees and the managers of the organization as well among the different employees working together. Several restrictive conditions might also be conducted depending on the needs and requirements of the organizations. Such associations are not only meant for the permanent members of an organization but they also deal with the problems and issues regarding any temporary employee working in the company (Introduction of Trade Unions, 2007). Thus the three primary relations taken care of by the trade unions of an organization are that of the employee-employee, employee-employer and the employer-employer. A group of people working together towards negotiation on different issues with respect to wages and other payments, work environment, security of the job, total hours of working, and other related issues concerning the lives of the organizational employees are what constitute a trade union benefiting the working atmosphere of the company. Such trade unions are permanent associations of an organization and created with the intentions to protect and consider all kinds of interests of the employees. The decisions negotiated and taken in the trade unions are the result of group work and not of any single individual. Thus there is a unity in the ultimate decision taken by the association in regard to resolution of any kind of issue arising among the employees. The trade unions are not only focused on the economic benefits of an organization. They are also changing over the period of time and looking more towards the development and benefits of the organizational employees to improve their working lives such that they are more motivated and encouraged towards improved performance and achievement of the organizational goals and objectives. This also focuses on the increasing level of status of the employees within the organizations (Introduction of Trade Unions, 2007). Thus understanding of the role and benefits of the trade unions within an organization provides with the view that a trade union in the Abu Dhabi Media Company would also prove to be beneficial for the company in the management of the human resources and consideration of the organizational employees. The formation of trade unions would aid the human resources management team of the company to better understand the needs and requirements of the employees. In such cases it would become easier for the management to determine ways to solve the issues and motivate the employees towards better performance. 5. Conclusion: Abu Dhabi Media Company being one of the largest media organizations in the UAE has been performing quite well in the industry. With its vision to lead the industry the company’s management and particularly the human resources team has been efficiently undertaking measures for the betterment and improved performance of the organizational employees. Based on these aspects, the team maintains the employment contracts and the employee relations keeping focus on all the needed measures as well as the disciplines of the organization. The UAE Labor Law being modified is expected to play a major role in the development of the hiring process of employees by the company. It would enable the company to enhanced access to the workforce available in the local market and hence cut down expenses related to trying to attract the foreign employees. The company has not been involved in the formation of trade unions till the present times. However the study of the role and benefits of trade unions reflect that the formation of trade unions by the organizational members would prove to assist the human resources management team of the company in the determination of the ways in which the issues of different employees can be resolved leading to greater satisfaction and increasing motivation of them for the fulfillment of organizational goals and objectives.
