The Lord of the Flies Chapter 1. The conch shell was the main reason the story had taken place. When the two boys, Ralph and Piggy, discovered a conch shell, Piggy realized that the conch shell could be used as a horn to summon the others. 2. Piggy’s eyes were sick. He wears thick glasses just to see clearly. 3. Being intellectual and clear thinker, Piggy was still ignored by Ralph to be apart from the exploring group; Piggy was also being criticized and mocked by the group. This action of the group helped them because Piggy’s ailment in his eyes could be a mere trouble for them inside the jungle. 4. To please and win Jack’s mood, Ralph appoints Jack to lead the other choir members to be the hunters for the group. Meanwhile, Ralph asked Jack and another choir member, Simon, to accompany him to explore the island. 5. The boys that were stranded on the island needed a brave and more intellectual leader. It would be nice if they picked Piggy. Besides, most of the great things happened involving Piggy’s decision or suggestion. Chapter 2 and 3 1. The boys collected a mound of dead wood to build a large signal fire. Hoping that any passing ship would see it and rescue them, the boys set the fire on the top of a central mountain. 2. One of the “littluns”, the same little boy who told about the “snake-beast” was playing in the burnt forest and was figured out by Piggy to be dead. 3. Being the leader of the tribe, only one who could speak without the conch shell on his hands was Ralph. 4. Trying to calm the “littluns” and the rest of the terrified boys, Ralph kept saying that there is no such thing as a beast on the island. 5. Walking in the midst of the jungle, Simon helped the “littluns” trying to pick a fruit hanging from a high branch. 6. Simon walked deeper into the forest and finds a place where he finds calm. He found a thick jungle glade, a peaceful place full of flowers and chirping birds. 7. Simon was a little calm and unwary; he helped Ralph to work on his plans and trying to do his best for the rest of the tribe. Jack, on the other hand, was furious and kept claiming and aiming that he and his choir members could hunt the pig inside the jungle. 8. Jack was more of an adventurous and furious type, he says he can feel the animals inside the jungle when he is on to them; he seems to feel he is like a real hunter. 9. In our life today, there are builders and destroyers in the society. A most descriptive example is the existence of the military (government) and the rebels. Chapter 4 1. Smart and idealistic, Piggy suggests that the materials they may find on the island could be of such use like to make a sundial to watch the time. This attitude of his was totally different from the other boys, where they immaturely make no use, only fun, of the thing they find which, Piggy suggests that could be held in to more use for them to survive on the island. 2. Jack used mud and clay to make as some kind of a war paint or a tribal mask on his face. 3. Simon, as part of Jack’s choir and band of hunters, was still feeling the unease of doing wrong things. He helps Piggy when needed and acts as selflessly as always. 4. Jack, being driven by bloodlust and the thirst for the pig’s blood, seemed to be more affected by the taboo of the old life. 5. Jack, at the first time he saw a pig, was more of an adventurous and somewhat aiming to help the tribe to survive by getting meat. Meanwhile, when he slays a pig, Jack turned into a brutal and frantic leader. 6. The clay that Jack wore as a tribal mask on his face has driven him to bloodlust and ravage to kill the pig. He became more vulgar, frantic, and cruel leader. 7. The narrator is saying that the mask compels the twins, Samneric and Bill, to join him. They were seemed like they were eluded by Jack’s bloodlust for the pig. Chapter 5 and 6 1. The “littluns” was a little bit worried about the parachutist’s chute which they all thought was the monster. 2. Before they the fire will go out and before they would be rescued, Ralph wants the rest of the boys to behave accordingly and to act according to the rules set. He was afraid of the crisis they were facing and the boys are not doing work but play. 3. Piggy is an intellectual practical thinker, this is the ability which Ralph lacks and admires. 4. In one night a fierce battle in the air took place, one parachutist drifts down to the island and was dead. 5. It is not a good idea for Ralph to discuss the beast thing as an evening assembly because he knew that the boys were getting frightened and terrified about it. 6. In the world of “grown-ups”, the dead parachutist that bailed out to the island; it came to speak the real world out there, war, it says unsafe; it symbolizes war and chaos in the real world. 7. It would be my dad, my dad before was a little more like he was afraid of something that never existed yet somehow very convincing that it does sometimes. He used to believe on the idea that we, humans, are not alone here, that there were also creatures that are seemed to be scary. That fear of his was then a little bit alleviated by the fact that we should never be afraid of something else, we would more be likely to afraid the real monsters, us ourselves. Chapter 7 and 8 1. Even driven by savagery, Ralph thought about home, and so about story books. Golding wants to imply that how hard the person may be, he still could think calm and become thirsty of the feelings inside home. 2. Hungry with the meat, Sam, Eric and Bill, joined Jack for his feast to eat the sow’s meat. 3. Simon wants to know to himself if the beast really exists and he was wrong thinking that the beast is within them; he want to climb the mountain to search for it. 4. In chapter 8, the boys killed another pig, a sow to be exact, but this kill is different from the other kills they maid; this kill is somewhat could be called violent and sexual in nature, where Roger forcefully impales the ass of the sow by his spear. 5. On page 140, the hunters take a new name, “savage”. 6. The narrator said that Ralph was like a chess player yet, however could not be a good one. This is because of the fact of Ralph’s attitude of being a coward. 7. At the end of Chapter 8, Simon saw something different on his mind. He saw the head of the sow on a stick that was covered with flies and was somehow, seemed to be speaking to him. He calls what he saw was the “Lord of the Flies”. 8. It is indeed advisable to act against or to never listen to the voice of reason inside of you in times when you are troubled or so much stressed by things that usually never happen yet suddenly it does. It will somehow provide false ideals and so as the negative side of you. Chapter 9 and 10 1. Simon, after fainting, goes up to the mountain and sees the thing they used to believe was a beast and finds that actually was not. 2. The cannon that continued to play throughout chapter 9 were referred to as their savagery and thirst for blood spill. 3. Jack was described as the proper chief for the tribe. He was idolized and admired by the rest of the boys for his talent and strength; he was respected as a great leader, the thing that was not given to Ralph. They thought that by his leadership, they find safety. 4. As the night gone deep and the boys, which were separated from Jack’s tribe of hunters, were discussing about the events that happened, the death of Simon, etc.; Ralph feared that with Jack’s frenzy, his tribe would attack the no long. 5. Piggy was something like to be called “grown-up”, when he fights Ralph in the water; his thoughts were more like mature in nature. 6. When the separated boys were attacked, Piggy tries to protect his eyeglasses for he can’t see without it. This weak attitude of Piggy was indicating a difference between him and the adventurous Jack. 7. Jack somehow was urged to punish and tie Wilfred for disobeying orders. 8. The attack and the death of Simon is something the same as what you could observe and see to our society nowadays. Some people were sometimes mistaken and the things which they haven’t done were taken into their hands. Chapter 11 and 12 1. Piggy plans to get his glasses by taking the conch shell to Castle Rock and speak to Jack. 2. Ralph called Jack a thief for stealing Piggy’s glasses. That made Jack angry and urged Jack to attempt attack Ralph by a spear in his chest. 3. When Ralph hid in the thicket, he found smoke in the Castle Rock, Jack’s tribe’s fortress. He ran away on the beach then found an officer. 4. Ralph’s group was threatened and frightened by the idea that the rest of Jack’s tribe would be painted; they fear that the rest of Jack’s tribe would be fierce as Jack is. 5. Jack’s tribe tried to catch Ralph; they searched after for Ralph to catch him. 6. Percival Medys Wemys Madison was unable to tell the officer his name and address because, I think he can hardly remember or he was too nervous and baffled in the scenery. 7. The events in the novel could not take place as a whole in our society. However, these events could take as a symbolism for the events that takes place today.
