The Story of an Hour Alternative Ending “Some one was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallardwho entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella. He had been far from the scene of the accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephines piercing cry; at Richards quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife” (Meyer, 2014). Josephine was standing still, absorbed with chaos of twisted emotions. The room was filled with ringing silence, everyone stared at Mrs.
Mallard, while her husband was motionless. She tried to link this event to the range of thoughts that flew through her head within the last hour. It seemed so long ago, as if it did not even happen. Truth be told, it did not actually occur, and now she felt captured as never before. She did not expect her regained freedom to be taken away so unexpectedly. Yet, somehow Mrs. Mallard managed to calm herself down. She put a relieved smile on her face and went to embrace her husband. Mr. Mallard was a little shocked with such an unusual greeting, and he continued with his story as there was no possibility of him knowing about this awful accident.
While Richards explained the situation and laughed at it together with Mr. Mallard, Josephine had already had a plan in mind. She realized that she could not live with this man anymore. Not after what had happened to her in this hour, no! She would not resign from this new found feeling of self-assertion. This divorce is not going to be easy, yet it is surely possible. Mrs. Mallard sensed she was now strong enough to do this. Josephine smiled at Brently Mallard, a person so indifferent to her, and ordered tea to the public.
She knew what she had to do, and she was happy.Works citedMeyer, Michael. The Compact Bedford Introduction To Literature. 10th ed. Bedford Saint Martins, 2014. Print.
