Lyon shows up to join them for a drink since he is aware that it is Troy’s payday. Racial discrimination is evident when Troy asks his boss Mr. Rand why a black employee cannot be drivers of garbage trucks but are only works as garbage lifters. The play reflects instances of conflicts between the Black and white communities. Troy played baseball and played in the Negro leagues but due to racial discrimination, he could not get a chance to play in the Major leagues since he got old before the major leagues began accepting black players in their teams (Wilson's, 1983). Cory, Troy, and Rose’s son develop an interest in playing baseball, however; his dad cannot allow him to play the game because he fears racial discrimination that exists in the teams. Cory convinces his father to purchase a television so that they can catch up with the latest sports series on the television. Troy dislikes the Pirates baseball team since it discriminates against the blacks. He gives an example of Clement a Puerto Rican boy who never gets a chance to play. Troy proceeds further by suggesting that for a black man to be recruited in such a team one has to be twice as better as the whites. This is a clear indication of the racial discrimination that exists between the black community and whites in the US. It is for this reason that Troy prevents his son from participating in sports. He approaches the school team coach and warns him about his son’s involvement in the team. In addition to this, he cancels the white man’s trip from North Carolina to recruit his son. Cory is extremely furious about his dad’s resistance and insists that he will not leave the school team. It is a clear indication that Troy has some experience with discrimination. Rose Cory’s mother pleads with him to allow their son to participate in sports. She says, “Why don’t you let the boy go ahead play football, Troy? Ain’t no harm in that. He’s just trying to be like you with the sports”. Bono depicts racial discrimination when he says “…my granddaddy used to pull his teeth with a plier. They ain’t had no dentists for the colored folks back then” (Wilson's, 1983). Elements of corruption also exist in the play when Troy sets a man free by paying money. Racial discrimination is still evident as the play shows Troy becoming the first black to be assigned duty as a garbage truck driver in the city.
