My Experience With the Assignments I will admit that I am now a totally different now compared to when I first walked through our room doors. When I first started attending our classes at the beginning of the semester, I found that I had a very difficult time in adjusting to the lessons. Being an ESL student, I had just recently transferred to Academic Study so I had to feel my way around the lessons and find my footing in terms of the study method being used. Since this class was the first class where I was going to be writing essays in English, I had a feeling of dread the first time the assignment was given out.
I will admit that I was confused when it came to writing essays but after a few false starts, I finally got the hang of essay writing and I am now quite comfortable with those assignments. I struggled with writing essays at first. In the beginning, it took me a whole day to write four papers on various topics. But as I learned the rudiments and shortcuts to research and writing essays, I began to find that the work was becoming lighter and easier. I no longer had to struggle to find the right words to use because I was fast becoming an avid English language reader.
These days, I now spend two hours on average when writing four papers. They say that each writer needs to find his strengths when it comes to using his gift of the written word. As a novice writer, I too had to try out various writing styles and methods before I found one that I could feel totally comfortable with. I needed to find a writing style that would allow me to flourish as a writer. I discovered that strength in my written expression of ideas. My ideas and sense of imagination tend to become so vividly graphic that the stories I relate literally jump off the page for the reader, so that is definitely my writing strength.
As an ESL writer, I know that I have a long road to go in terms of becoming a proficient enough English language writer. Each day I struggle to find the right words to use in writing my essays which are getting more complex in content and form by the day. I struggle in particular with my grammar and punctuation usage which is why I plan to continue on attending Intermediate to Advanced ESL classes. I also want to attend some creative writing classes in order to help me learn more about and also, to be able to practice word usage, grammar, and punctuation in various written settings.
Of all the papers that we were asked to write in this class, I believe that I learned the most from the work I did in our Media Paper (Analysis / Argument) class. The reason I say this is because it helped me learn how to see both sides of an issue and argue the pro and con side of the issue in a highly educated and reliable manner. Since this was one of the first essays that I did which required me to argue my own point of view and use proper essay citation formats, which was a first for me in this class.
The lessons from this particular course truly helped me push myself harder in accomplishing our class and home work.
