? A Couple at the Coffee Shop A Couple at the Coffee Shop Friday evening and the streets flock with people, couples walking hand in hand. The weekend is about to set in, as the fun mood sets in. There is no better way to end a busy week, except by sharing time together. Coffee shops are the best venues for such meetings. With the ample environment to share a good talk, and calmly lit interior, a couple could look for no better place to have their evening out. Many single people find their way to the bars and drinking dens. To them, alcohol and loud music is the best way to relive their weeklong stress. Personally, I find it senseless how one would content with stress from the boss, and still hope to relieve the same stress from blaring hip-hop or trance music. My preference would be a coffee date, with soft soothing music, in a room with warm light, and beautifully colored walls. Such is an example of a couple who walks into a famous joint at the periphery of the central business district. Contrary to the central business district, there is little traffic in the periphery. Since every person wants to have fun at the town center, it draws more cars into the streets, leading to high traffic volumes. A motorist hoots in the traffic, with the constant blaring of the train. Noisy conditions spoil a date. However, in this coffee joint, little traffic passes by. This means minimal noise, increasing concentration levels. This is the perfect environment for a couple. Like one that walks into the coffee shop, hand in hand. They look perfect, with their matching height. The man is slightly taller than the woman, who is in heeled shoes to match her height with that of her partner. For a while, they stand on the walkway, trying to decide the best place to sit. They discuss for a while, frequently looking at each other. They seem to weigh the opportunities available to them. Early comers already settled on the strategic places, especially those that overlook the street below. They giggle for a minute, obviously at ease and comfortable with each other. The woman, in her high heels breaks into a big smile when a couple sitting at the farthest corner from the entrance stands up to leave. This sends them a signal, and in a desperate move to guard the seat from unknown couple, they immediately go for it. They walk in measured steps, with the woman breaking into a catwalk. On reaching the table, an attendant hurries up to tidy it up. She changes the tablecloth and rearranges the flowers. The man stretches his hand in a gesture to welcome his date to sit down. Once she is comfortably in her seat, he joins her on the other side, so that they face each other. The man seems to say something nice to the woman as she blushes giggles then looks down. Slowly, she rises up her head again, to catch the next thing that her partner was saying before responding in a near laughter mood. She looks elegant under the warm light, with her laughter revealing a nice of teeth. Her hair, relaxed on her back dangles occasionally as she shakes her head occasionally. However, she got into the table in a manner that must have caught everybody else’s attention in the manner. Dressed in a green short dress covering less body from her knees, she must have made him feel proud, considering that, he knew she was beautiful. He was in a black suit, perhaps tailored as it fit him so well on his well-built body. He did not have a tummy; neither did his face have excess meat. His head and beard were clean-shaven. He could have passed for a banker or a business executive. It was however hard to tell. A different attendant approached them to take their order. They engaged in another one of their discussions. After a few seconds, the waiter scribbled something in his order book and left. For the time they were at the table, none of the two partners held their phone. They must have highly regarded the time they were together with a lot of seriousness. The man in some instances looked at the woman, too closely into her eyes. They appeared to play some mind teasing games, as they in some instances took turns to make some guesses. True, this was the most suitable place for such people to spend their Friday evening, a place where they could laugh and giggle, flirt and share their whole week’s stresses. Undisturbed by any loud music, with the soothing music making their night, they felt more compelled towards each other than ever. At one time, the talk became so deep and profound that they held out their hands and cupped them together, a gesture of compassion. The attendant brought their order, milky coffee in huge cups and snacks. The woman appeared to object the intimidating size of the cup. After a lengthy conversation again, she appeared to buy the man’s idea and accept the coffee. Anyway, that was the standard size of the coffee cup. Perhaps she ate little to maintain her slender shape, which the man must have recognized, as she held her belly. Unmistakably, these two were in love, with the manner in which they were at ease and comfortable with each other. Almost simultaneously, they took a sip, and nodded to agree that it was one of the best in town. The woman nibbled her snack, and then dropped it on the plate. She picked up a serviette and wiped her mouth. She left nothing to chance when it came to looking good and maintaining her looks. The man took a deeper bite, enough to fill his mouth. That was the very last time the woman took the snack. Long after the attendant served them coffee, they took little, talking more and more. Despite the shop offering the best coffee in town, it could not act as a substitute to their lengthy intimate talk. The man seemed to take more than the woman did. Hours went by, and the talk became more intimate. They started patting onto each other’s shoulders and holding hands. When they could not hold the talk further, the man took out his wallet, pulled out a few dollar bills, inserted them in the menu booklet lying on the table, and got up. Hand in hand, they exited the coffee shop into the parking. An engine came to life and the car drove off. That must have been their car. I could guess no more, but I was sure they drove off together.
