He told the king that he had a very beautiful daughter, who could turn straw into gold. The king sees this as a nice deal and instructs the miller to bring his daughter, and promises the miller that he will marry her, if she turns straw into Gold (Cohon and Deutsch 14). When the girl arrives, the king instructs her to change the straw into gold, and if she is not able, her head would be chopped off. The girl strives and with no success she is unable to, but a very short man appears who has magical powers and changes the straw into gold, after making deals with the girl and this happen for some few days and the amount straw to be changed into gold is increased.
It reaches a time when the short man asks the girl that when he turns the last straw into gold, he wants the first born child as payment and the girl agrees. When the child is born, the short man comes for him, but the girl is not ready to let it go, so they strike a deal that she should be able to know the short man’s name, instead of the short man taking the baby and she is given a duration of three days. On the last day, the girl through a messenger is able to know the name of the short man, which is Rumplestilskin (Cohon and Deutsch 14).
Rumplestilskin is a tale and thus there are characteristics of tales that should be looked at: A tale is a type of fantasy often about royalty. Fantasy is all about dreaming of something that cannot happen in the real life. There is a lot of fiction when it comes to fantasy. In Rumplestilskin, there is the fantasy that straw can be changed (Cohon and Deutsch 10). One character is helped by another. The miller’s daughter was helped by Rumplestilskin to change straw into gold (Cohon and Deutsch 10).
A helper or a bad guy may have magical powers. Rumplestilskin had the magical powers of changing straw into gold (Cohon and Deutsch 10). A tale has a happy ending. In the Rumplestilskin, a happy ending occurs when the miller’s daughter is able to know the name of the short man, and she is able to keep her baby (Cohon and Deutsch 10). Rumplestilskin being a literature work, there are different stylistic devices that are used and are clearly brought out. Emphasis on the significance of three. Number three is used several times in the tale, showing that it is very significant. For example the straw that the girl is given by the King to spin is kept in three rooms, and the chances given to the girl to turn the straw into gold are three after which her head would be chopped off if she fails.
When the girl gets married to the King and gives birth to a child, Rumplestilskin gives her three days to figure out his name, else he would have to take the child as they had agreed. 2. Changing straw into gold. The miller’s desire to get rich quickly without working to earn the money makes him claim that his daughter can change straw into Gold. This scenario represents the desire to get rich quickly, which is very common in human beings. It also indicates the miller’s daughter's transformation from a poor girl to the King’s wife.
The following are some of the life lessons that have been brought out clearly: 1. Greed. In the
