In order to address the problem of teen pregnancy it though of a Teen service program called “Teen Scenarios”. This program is a kind of competition that will involve all teens from the age of twelve to the age of seventeen. In this program teens will be required to come up with a script about the problem of teen sexuality. They will write stories about teen sexuality and information that they think is important to prevent pregnancies. These stories will then be developed to short videos and films with moral lessons to learn from and then they will be freely distributed to schools and other public places where teens can easily access them.
My program is not new as it builds on other social change programs that have been in existence for a long period of time such as “TEEN TALK”. The novelty in my idea is that the teens will be encouraged to participate in designing messages that address their needs through a competition where the best script or story writer will be awarded. As we know teen pregnancy is caused by many factors ranging from lack of parental advice to peer pressure. This problem cannot be solved through the diffusion approach that has been used for a long period of time of disseminating information through the media expecting that the teens will automatically change behavior.
The teens need to be involved in coming up with solutions to this problem in a language they understand. Therefore participation is key to such a program and this will come about through this competition (Jennings, 2000). The program or service in this case is intended to generate awareness about teen pregnancy and get the teens to talk about their sexuality in order to address the problem of teen pregnancy. My target market is the teens that are between the ages of 12 to 17. This program will not aim at a specific gender as is with other programs.
It will involve both girls and boys so that they all have information pertaining to their sexuality and what they can do to prevent teen pregnancies. Though the competition will be in categories that will separate the boys and the girls to ensure they learn information that is necessary for each gender. According to the US census Bureau people under the age of 18 make up about 24.4 % of Chicago’s population that translates to about 65,772,591 teens. Approximately half of these are aged between 12 and 18.
This is the approximate market size for the service of program (CB, 2010). Because of the nature of the service that is being offered it will not be appropriate to quantify the population in terms of money. The method used in estimating the size of this market is use of statistics that show the number of people in this area. There are other methods for determining the market size but those are appropriate for products but not for a program like this one. The specific needs of this market are information.
Several studies have proved that teen pregnancy is as a result of lack of information and therefore through the provision of appropriate information concerning teen sexuality and ways of
