Physical Security in Banks - Essay Example

Putting in place physical security personnel is just the first step; individuals have to be trained adequately, armed, and understand the various processes of the bank they are protecting. The flip side is that security can be as much of a deterrent to would-be bank robbers as it would to the customer (Gabrielson & Walter, 2014). At the end of the day, customers, especially new ones, have to feel at ease enough to come into a bank and have their financial needs met. This is conceivably the dilemma that many banks suffer through (Dempsey, 2010).

The issue of a small-town effect of raising the heights of the teller counters without necessarily adding extra barriers is a case in point. Here, perhaps the intention was to secure the tellers, while at the same time having them feel accessible enough, at least to the customers in a sort of informal small-town shop setting (Tianjie & Faisal, 2016). Physical security is certainly important, especially seeing as bank robbers are perhaps at the more extreme range of the security risks that banks have to deal with.

With this in mind, they have to be a part of a larger system of security, complementing for instance camera surveillance and other physical barriers.
