Background Information Lynn is a private learning that was founded long in 1962; theuniversity is an independent institution, which is non-profit making, co-educational, as well as a residential institution that accommodates student from all walks of life. The institution is positioned in Boca Raton area, sandwiched between Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. The institution is fairly large, with a student population of about 150,000. the students has managed to run effectively achieving its goals in various courtesy of its mission and vision as well as values that guide their decisions and organizational practice; the mission and vision statements of the university have been established as follows, Mission statement “Our mission is to provide the education, support and environment that enable individual students to realize their full potential and to prepare for success in the world.”(Lynn University, 1) The institution’s mission statement has played an important role in guiding it towards excellence performance through the fifty years that it has existed since its inception. The institution believes that it’s upon this mission statement that it will transcend greater heights into becoming one of the universities with a global influence on various issues that affect the normal lives of people. Vision statement The institution has done a lot to ensure that it lives to its vision; it has combined the efforts of all its stakeholders to ensure that staying on course on this vision remains a matter of top priority. The vision statement that the institution has found a lot of self-esteem in it reads as follows; “To be recognized as one of the most innovative, international, and individualized small universities in America.” In order to live and achieve its vision, the institution intends to rely on the majority youthful population that characterizes the student population, the excellent and strategic location that keeps it within reach to many students. At the same time, the excellent association between the student body and the faculty proves to another vital ingredient in achieving the vision, thus establishing itself as one of the forerunner institutions in the United States of America Corporate culture at the University The university enjoys a corporate culture that is characterised by active and free interaction among students and the faculty representatives. The institution has committed to admitting different student from all walks of life in a bid to encourage cultural interaction and diversity. The university has derived a lot of strength from the fact that it is providing an environment that values different races and knowledge sharing. This is something that seems to add impetus in the efforts being done towards innovations and inventions in the different areas the university address. The institution enjoys state of the art technology that is used in instructional delivery and research purposes. The institution encourages and appreciates freedom of thought and intellectual inquiry in various issues that are central towards environmental management, sustainable development and human life in general. It is for this reason that the university has embarked on a strategy that is geared towards enhancing environmental conservation and awareness programs. An effective campaign is bound to see the university partner with other like-minded agencies in efforts geared towards environmental conservation and sustainability programs. Statement of the problem In our modern society, the concept of environmental conservation has become a central issue that cannot be ignored by any person. There are so many challenges and problems that have resurfaced because in one way or another, man has not been considerate enough in ensuring a safe environment. People have been natural resources without giving any due concern on efforts that can sustain them for long-term existence and use. The concept of conversation may not have come at the right time better than it has. Most governments and international agencies have been on the forefront developing strategies that can help in effectively articulating this problem, with many research and development projects started on the same concept. Many learning institutions have created syllabi for educating learners on the importance of environmental conversation with the aim of helping them participate in conservation activities in different parts of the continent. The process of coming up with a sustainable environment for a higher institution like the University requires a series of measures that ought to be given due consideration. When all such issues are incorporated in the establishment of effective and efficient programs, then the present and future environments can be assured of sustainability. Some of areas that need to be given due consideration when creating environmental management and conservation include energy, transportation, ecological aspects, water and the entire concept of the hydrological cycle as well as waste disposal programs and recycling processes. There is a lot of wastage the goes on not only in universities and other learning institutions, but also in homes and industries. People use environmental resources without much awareness about how they can be sustained, preserved or recycled back into active use again. This means that of all the areas that require keen attention about environmental conservation, the concept of waste disposal recycling requires prime importance. Recycling of materials is not only important for environmental purposes, but it reduces expense that can be incurred in the process of acquisition of other new resources. This research aims at finding an insight into how an effective public relations campaign can be done for a program that emphasizes of environmental conservation and management by different stakeholders. Goals and objectives The main goals for this PR campaign will be as follows; To create a public awareness about university’s plan To create effective public awareness regarding the measures taken by the university To find out the existing public opinion about its effectiveness Definitions In the course of interacting with different systems in the society, many resources are consumed. These resources are either renewable or not, for this reason, it is important to treat all resources with great concern and care of the generations that are coming after us. This thinking has come along with important concepts that are vital in environmental conservation mechanisms, some of them have been defined below. recycling is a term that can be defined as collection of activities that are carried out by individuals, institutions and other agencies with the aim if re-using the those materials that have been used and discarded as being non re usable again (Silverman, 8; Robinson, 216). This means that they have been rendered useless and may not be of any significance to the environment. Waste reduction on the other hand refers to concept of restricting the manufacturing if materials that can be seen as being un-usable, arising from the utilization of different materials for different purposes in normal processes of life (Bhushan, 7; Perry 1). Public relations on the other hand refer to all those aspects of reputation. it is regarded the end result of what a person, does, what he says as well as what the general public says about him. a universities public relations campaign refers to all those activities that universities prefers to do in the interest of the public. in order to carry out an effective strategy, then there is need to have a set of activities that will convey the message about what is to be done and how it ought to be done. Going green Going green is an environmental conversation and management program that has been developed and designed by Lynn University. This program has come about from the concern that the world is currently having about environmental conservation. It is important to realize that all governmental of the world as well as international agencies have been facing the effects of global warming and other harmful effects of poor environmental conservation habits. The program has been designed in such a way that there are student activities that are being done already in an effort to make students participate in environmental conversation practices. The community has also been given special consideration with activities created that will be carried out in the community. the program has given special consideration to global warming and the idea of people and governments to reduce carbon emissions in the environment. The university wants to make its institution an energy efficient institution by adopting practices that reduce carbon emissions. By adopting successful practices, it hopes that other people will propagate the same in their various environments. This is the reason why the PR campaign will seek to educate and create awareness about environmental conservation and management practices. Another important aspect of this campaign program is the concept of landscape and ecology. In all the objectives that the program has adopted, it has given the institute priority meaning that all those practices that the university wants other people and institutions to know are being done at the university first. It is believed that the success of these initiatives will be a good platform to have other people learning from the implementation approaches that will be required to make it successful in their places. The institution has planted trees and other kinds of vegetation that have made the institutions environment to be very green and serene. Water is an important resource that sustains plant and animal life on the face of the earth, there is need for people to understand the important of effective and efficient use of water so that wastage can be minimized as far as possible. The institution has done a lot of efforts in reducing water wastage and enhanced recycling processes. The campaign plan will create awareness about various ways of conserving water resources on the face of the earth. there are different strategies that have been planned to ensure that student, people in the community and the whole world at large participates not only in water conservation practices but in general environmental sustainable management and conservation. Research plan and financial considerations In order to have a successful strategy the campaign plan will have to employ a cost effective budget. This means that the plans that have been set to be done will have to be constrained. This is because; the plan requires money for effective implementation, one of the challenges with this approach is that financial resources are not readily available. This points to the need to have important sources of finances for all the campaign plans. Some of the identified sources of funding for the project will be volunteers from the student body and other interested parties. The institution will launch a funds drive aiming at collecting enough finances to manage the publicity aspects as well as other kinds of investments that will be done to create awareness of the program. The reason why the project will require a lot of money is the fact that it aims to reach many people beyond the institution and country to other parts of the world. Also targeted as important sources of funding will the government and other international agencies. The move to approach the government and other international agencies is driven by the fact that environmental conservation and management has risen to become a global concern, with many international conferences held to by governments of the world to set framework of how the process can be undertaken by all people. The effects of environmental exploitation everybody, this means that approaches done tom mitigate the harm should be an obligation for everyone. In drawing the budget, a lot has been given towards those strategies that will reduce the running expenses as much as possible. For instance, it is believed that the institution will engage in mutual agreements with media institutions and other promotional agencies so that the costs to be incurred in promotion will have to be made lower. The money that will be saved will be useful towards reaching the other costs crucial to the success of the campaign plan. the following is a sample of the budget plan that will be used in the research as well as achievement of the campaign plan SAMPLE There will be a research project that will be done on the campus to know the feasibility of the campaign plan before it is launched to the public. This project will be funded by some of the agencies that have been identified as important partners towards the success of the campaign plan. Project period 01/05/2015 to 9/30/2020 Budget period 10/01/2015 to 9/30/2016 (Year 1 budget) Amount Request Senior Personnel (3) 38, 000 Other Personnel Analysis Technician@ 6 months 16,000 2 Graduate Students @ 12 months 12,000 Total Personnel: 64,000 Other settlement (PI, Co-PIs & Technician) 13,000 Equipment 15,000 Travel 4,500 Materials and Supplies 9,500 Consultant 2,500 Printing 1,500 Total Direct Costs 115,000 F&A Costs @ 38% MTDC (125,000) 47,500 Total Direct and F&A Costs 197,500 Total Project Cost $ 197,500 Campaign plan design This campaign plan will have the main objective of ensuring environmental sustainability and conservation. There institution has come up with special activities that will be done at school level and community level to ensure that the main goal is achieved. For a public relations strategy, the main aim will be engaging in communicational activities that will help spread information about the main theme. One of the tools that have been identified to be important towards reaching this objective is the mass media. Mass media will involve both print and non-print media; print media will incorporate the use of newspapers and journals. The importance of these tools is that they reach many people on daily basis and they will be important in spreading information about “going green” campaign as well as other projects that need to be done in order to preserve and create a sustainable environment, not only for the university but for the community, the entire American community and the world at all. In addition, there will be massive use of broadcasting services; this will add impetus to the use of print media. The use of broadcasting services will be important, bearing the fact that we have a section of people who may not have the ability to read and understand information that is presented in print media. One of the advantages of broadcasting services over print media is that they reach many people in a single instance. The university will have to collaborate with different media houses so that it gains the platform to create awareness of its campaign to many people. It is also important to recognize the effect of advancement in information and technology, in fact, the institutions has developed important investments into this technology in most of its programs and instructional activities. Technology has been the driver of inventions and innovations that have characterised the institution. It is out of this technological advancement that the project “going green” was established. The use of technology in championing for the implementation of this plan will see the use of social media to drum up sport from fellow students and other people who will access it. It is important to understand that the social media has grown in greatly in the recent past; there are very many people who rely on this platform to obtain important information that is trending. Studies have shown that there are many young people who use this platform in order to keep abreast of changes in the social and economic environment. The university will rely on the proficiency of its experts in making promotional strategies for the campaign. internet users will be required to log into online social accounts and make referrals to as many people as possible, educating them on the need to protect the environment and undertake different practices which will reduce carbon emissions in the environment, by doing so, they will be participating in environmental conservation practices not only within the institution, but in America and the entire globe. One of the advantages with this strategy is that people will be able to engage the project proprietors in live forums, asking questions that relate to its relevance and effectiveness as well as mode of performance. For students in the campus, the institution has already started holding public lectures and discussion forums on how to undertake the project. One of its strategies has been inviting resourceful persons and different experts, to explain the need of the various objectives that have been developed in the campaign plan. Resource persons and experts are important in this campaign plan because they address people’s emerging issues as soon as they address them. In addition, people are able to understand the importance of environmental practices by looking at statistics that show the extent to which man’s activities have been harmful. Hearing such information from resource persons is important towards creating the much-needed intrinsic motivation to students and other people who are needed towards attaining the goals and objectives of the environmental campaign plan as well as those of the institution. Monitoring and evaluation The success of any campaign method lies in its proper evaluation so that changes can be made where they are needed in the course of operation. A good campaign program has to meet up it’s the set goals and objectives in order to be termed as reliable. This campaign program has the main aim of having people to know and participate in initiatives that are geared towards environmental conservation. Lynn University expects that after people have had the awareness about the essence of keeping the environment clean, they will be able to participate actively. In order to determine whether the campaign plan is meeting and delivering its expected outcomes, the institute will make use of a variety of tools. One of the methods that will be useful in evaluation and assessment will be use of peer reviews (Silverman, David, 8). Under this method, the institute will engage many professionals who have vast experience in the development and implementation of programs that are aimed at conserving the environment. Currently, environmental conservational and sustainability programs are at the core of many government and non-governmental agencies. This means the implementation of the go green campaign will attract many people with like-minded ideas for partnership. This will add impetus to the attainment of objectives. People who are selected to perform peer reviews are important in making valuable recommendations into areas that need amendment and providing important inputs that strengthen the already stated ideas under implementation. In addition, there will be the use of other instruments that have been identified to be essential towards the achievement of Go green’s goals and objectives. Bibliometrics will are evaluation and assessment tools that use scientific outputs and outcomes. This methods draws has been used in many scientific research program with proven excellence. The method draws from information on publications and citations that are found in various resource centres places of research. Bibliometrics are important tools which uses various statistical methods in order to make clear analysis of research programs. Lynn University will make full use of this method to come up with reliable information about the effectiveness of its campaign plan. Another method that will be if importance will be the use of case studies: these assessment and evaluation tools use multiple sources of evidence. The importance of case studies is that they provide important information that is useful in deriving important conclusions about the performance of different research. The main sources of information for case studies include literature that is peer-reviews, which is normally referred to as grey literature (the literature articles that are normally printed and made available by the government and other agencies). The university hopes to rely on the various human and non human resources that are within its reach. The university has had an investment into essential aspects of information technology that it hopes that it will play an important role in the development and use of such case studies. Besides use of case studies, another tool that is important will be the use of surveys and consultations. These tools are important in collecting quantitative and qualitative information relating to different characteristics of population and other research programs. Surveys draw from a wide range of resources that are essential in providing important information for about a particular program or event. They may usually lay emphasis on different opinions or factual information depending on their function, in order to obtain information, different questions are administered to individual who are resourceful person. Their views and opinions are usually taken and analysis with respect to the point in question. Lynn University has many researchers, some of whom are employed in the institution and others may be students undertaking research programs in the institute. By using all these tools the university will be able to gain proper insight into its campaign plan and evaluate the effectiveness of its various activities that are aimed at meeting the objective of the “going green” program and other aspects of environmental conservation and management. These tools will apply for all the programs that will be implemented by the university as well as those that will be adopted by the community and other agencies. This will seek to reflect the vision of institute of being the leader in environmental management and conservation as well as other programs that aimed at making it establish itself as the forerunner in America. The university will give priority to partnerships, collaboration and affiliations to various agencies so that it would be easier to achieve corporate goals and objectives for the project and the entire institution.
