How to Conduct Employee Evaluations Executive summary The purpose of this research report is to provide and outline an employee performance evaluation. The method that was used on this employee evaluation was the measuring of accomplishment. The quantity and quality of work is to be measured to determine that the employee has met their goals, thus reaching accomplishment. The purpose of goals is to encourage the employee to do their best in their work; without being encouraged to reach their goals, they will not have the strength or confidence to do so. Setting a specific time frame in which the employee can accomplish their goals is a necessity, which helps to see if the employee is staying on track as they try to meet their goals. It is vital to know the skills of employees as to understand the goals that they should take on. Research findings have shown that employee performance evaluations also depend on the development and organizational improvement of the company. By conducting this evaluation, employees can be instructed on how to provide better work. The evaluation can also help to provide the employee with personal development and organizational goals. The possibilities of an increase in salary, a promotion, and good recognition can also result from employee evaluations. This report concludes that not only do employee performance evaluations help to improve employee work, but can also aid a company in improving its business. Goals, whether long-term or short-term, cannot be met without regular evaluations. Recommendations discussed within the report include: increased productivity, making retainable and realistic goals, improving business relations, and helping various industries to narrow down on areas within their business that need improvement. Introduction This final paper is based on the extended research report that I have been conducting, providing an up-to-date status on employee performance evaluations based on the subject of human resources in the field of business. To completely understand the challenges that people face with human resource issues, I have opted to research and address the importance of the employee performance evaluation. I began researching this topic on June 10, 2010, and have been steadily adding on to it until it was completed. Employee performance evaluation has been an interesting topic to research and write about. When employers undergo performance evaluations for their employees, they are providing their workers with either praise or criticism, letting them know of the good they are doing and if anything needs to be changed. Employees benefit from performance evaluations by understanding their shortfalls. Performance evaluations can also help to keep employees out of trouble, or to keep track of what problems the employees may be facing (Nolo, 2010). Body The research process of learning about employee performance evaluations allowed me to comprehend the different obstacles and challenges that I faced and how they were similar or different from other problems. By the end of my research, I was grateful to be able to understand more about this topic. The evaluations yield helpful evidence when determining whether employees have a proper understanding of what their assigned tasks are. The setting of goals, and the documenting and providing of feedbacks further helps to confirm that employees understand their required outputs (Heathfield, 2010). Regardless of the business type, all performance evaluation management systems are made up of the same four basic stages (Squidoo, 2010), which are as follows: Clear goals/targets Completing the work in the best possible way Reviewing and reflecting what has been done Setting new goals/targets to look forward to Performance evaluation helps to improve job effectiveness. When holding performance review meetings with the employee, it is beneficial to record the overall evaluations as follows: Accomplishments Dependability Services and relationships Adaptability and flexibility Decision making/problem solving The purpose of the employee performance evaluation is to establish proper communication between the managers and their employees. The employee performance evaluation allows discussion to be made in regard to clearer understandings between everyone, which can potentially increase the productiveness of a company. While preparing the self-evaluation, business directors should deliberate on whether the self-evaluating process will involve written questionnaires or a live interview; the thoroughness of the process as it is undergone each year; and if any unique situations exist that may cause problems for the process’s design. The advantage that organizations have when their employees undergo employee performance evaluations is that the organizations can use the results of the evaluations to plan for future success with the business. Interview I was given the opportunity of interview my supervisor at my place of employment. Her name is Lori Taggart, and she works at Franklin University’s Scanning Department. I conducted an interview as this was a requirement of my paper. I was able to pick someone related to my topic of employee performance evaluation. Q: What can you tell me about employee performance evaluations? A: Employee performance evaluations are used as tools to promote proper communication between supervisors and their employees. Q: Why are employee performance evaluations so vital to the managers? A: They are important because managers like to see if the goals of both the employees and the business were met. From there, they can deliver the appropriate constructive feedback. Q: What can you tell me about decreased employee motivation? A: Good examples of decreased employee motivation are an inaccurate evaluation, no evaluation, or no increase in salary. Q: What do you think are the advantages of employee performance evaluations? A: Employee performance evaluations are vital for employee motivation, their general attitude in the workplace, and behavior development. It helps to create a positive, beneficial relationship between management and staff. Q: How can employee performance evaluations help to determine the strengths and weaknesses of employees? A: In the areas that an employee meets or exceeds expectation is considered to be a strength, while in the areas that an employee falls short or does not meet the expectation is considered to be the weakness. Suggestions: In order to design beneficial performance evaluations, it would be recommended that businesses increase the following: Quantity and quality of the work accomplished Business goals/targets Employee morale Improving performance enhancement Recommendations It is important to understand the purposes and benefits of employee performance evaluations as they can contribute to a variety of things in the workplace. Companies need to be ensured that their employees have a high morale; if an employee is comfortable in their position, productivity will increase. Conducting employee performance evaluations will allow a business to know what their strengths and weaknesses are so that they can make the proper changes and improvements in relation to their goals (CF Staffing, 2007). The following tips are good recommendations for any business: Keep record of employee performance Be specific and realistic Be honest Focus more on evaluating the performance, not the personality Listen to your employees Conclusion Whether the business is a big professional company, a small organization, or just a manager and employee, employee performance evaluations can be invaluable and beneficial. It is not uncommon to find businesses or organizations that give high priority to employee performance evaluations as they have become convinced that that if their evaluations yield positive results then the performance of production will be equally as high. Employee performance evaluations have become a vital part of managing a business more efficiently (Abbey, 2007). The research conducted in this project was very interesting, and it leaves me feeling confident that I did well with my final research report as I organized and scheduled effectively.
