S. Johnston, the Confederate general, as a function of how the Confederacy may have fared had he survived the battle of Shiloh. As with any such speculative history, the best that a historian can hope to do is to base the analysis solely on the known facts that existed regarding the particular time, the nature of the war, and the known actions of participants in hopes of painting an accurate, albeit fanciful, picture of how events may have turned out differently had this statesman, courageous and talented soldier, and high ranking Confederate general had lived to, at the very least, the conclusion of the Civil War.
