Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis is an autobiographical account of her life in Iran from age six to fourteen and having experienced the Islamic Revolution in 1979. I find the portion entitled “The Veil” to be most illustrative of female repression.

However, these new advancements collided with a set of previously held notions and were often in conflict with old ways of thinking. The old ways and ideas, often based in practical fact, were known as superstitions through the Elizabethan era. Many of these superstitions, which began with grains of truth, generated fear in people seeking explanations to natural events, but are carried on today as anecdotal reactions to everyday situations.
