Extract of sample "Factors That Influence People to Surrender Their Relatives to Care Homes"

Once the respondents decided the need for care at a care home, they decided on who to assume financial responsibility and the following graph shows the distribution of the responses. More than half of the respondents, 57 percent, used savings to conclude responsibility for cost while 26 percent used means-tested and the remaining 17 percent used assets to determine who would pay for the relative’s care cost. Means of funding the care cost was another factor and the following graph shows the distribution of responses over private funding, social services funding, and integration of the two. More than 52 of the respondents reported all-private funding while 30.4 percent reported integration of both public and private funding. Only 17.4 percent reported application of all social funding for the home care services.

Among the participants who used private funding, a majority used savings and the sale of a house was also a significant source of funding as shown in the following graph.
Annuity and insurance are unpopular methods for private funding of home care services, having been reported by a total of eight percent. Seventy-five percent of the respondents who used private funding reported use of savings while 22 percent sold houses. In case the primary resources run out, the “means are tested” and “social service” identify secondary liability as to the following graph shows.

This identifies reduced funding options and a greater level of responsibility among relatives.
In cases where care cost is assumed by the social service, only a few relatives are willing to top up the remaining costs as shown in the following graph. The results show that only 27 percent of relatives are willing to top up care costs if social service assumes the primary responsibility of funding the care. The remaining 72 percent of the relatives did not take the top-up responsibility. Read More
