ANALYSING ACADEMIC TEXTS by Student’s Name Code + Course Name Professor University City/State Date ANALYSING ACADEMIC TEXTS Text 1 is on an assignment about the desirability of hybrid cars over petrol engine powered vehicles. Here, the student is required to tell the reader the reason for claiming that hybrid cars are desirable. The author should show the advantages of hybrid over the petrol vehicles. The argument ought to be articulate and to the point in order to convince the users of the text that hybrid cars are the way to go. In text 2, the task is to show how hybrid cars will dominate the global market over the next ten years. Here, the student is required to narrate and show evidence of how the domination will occur. Reasons ought to be provided for the reader to find ground for the claim made. Hence, the assignment required to argue about the domination process, especially how it will happen and why. The answer is relevant. Text 2 can be used as source of knowledge necessary in deciding whether to adopt Hybrid Cars over the ICE cars. The text captures the specific contents that appreciate the value of an eco-friendly environment due to Hybrid Cars’ use. The text refers to a considerable number of references, thereby enriching the content and making it relevant. In Text 1, the student has not captured all the facts needed to prove why the hybrid cars are more desirable as opposed to the ICE cars. Furthermore, three references are inadequate because such a paper requires solid and convincing evidence to make the reader agree with the proposal. It is hard to know where the information came from without sufficient proof from quality sources; hence, text 1 may be considered irrelevant due to lack of enough evidence. Obviously, the student did not create that information, thereby exposing his/her ignorance of the original author. It fails to give the due credit to the source. Such information is improper for official use or enticing consumers into purchasing hybrid cars. Text 1 is freely developed because it is organized into paragraphs without subheadings, but the conclusion and reference parts are given subtitle. This shows the lack of following guidelines due to the evident inconsistence. The introductory paragraph gives the essay’s thesis as a guidance of what to expect in the entire discussion. Each paragraph has its own idea, which shows the understanding of the student and a flow of ideas. Text 2 has a systematic organization and shows a high quality of presentation. The author begins with a table of content to show the different areas to be covered in the paper. Secondly, a list is given of the figures in the document. Each of the subsequent areas has a subheading to show what the student is discussing. Evidently, text 2 shows clarity and understanding of the requirements since the student has followed the guidelines. The introduction from Text 2 is clearer and precise. It defines the contents of the text and the extent to which the concepts are to be covered. It has outlined the contents of the tasks as per the given topic. On the other hand, Text 1 has only given an overview of the hybrid cars and showed the increasing desire of adopting them into the market. Text 1 introduction does not show the link to the environmental perspective of sustaining the environment using hybrid cars. It only defines the increasing critics surrounding the market value of the product. Text 2 introduces the conservation concept in an attempt to explain the effects, amount, and options available in controlling emissions of greenhouse gases by promoting eco-friendly energy sources. Text 2 has outlined its topic as air pollution from carbon emissions, flexibility and innovation and performance and so on. Therefore, the introduction has fully explained the relevant issues to be addressed in the task. The contents of the two texts are different: conservation versus innovation mindset. Text 1 is more environmentally sensitive as compared to Text 2. Text 2 reveals the ability of the student to perform extensive research on the topics and give information on the task through adequate referencing. However, Text 1 gives basic information on the assignment and fails to reference sufficiently. For instance, Text 2 uses diagrammatic illustrations to explain why the Hybrid Cars have dominated the markets and the need to appreciate them as eco-friendly. Fig 3 in Text 2 shows the efficiency of Hybrid cars as low emitters of greenhouse gases due to their energy source. According to Text 2, the Hybrid cars are more adaptable to the society that seeks to lower the costs of production within an industry. The text defines Hybrid Cars as a cheaper and convenient form of transport, thereby prompting clients to purchase these cars. Text 1 lacks detailed contents to help the reader understand the causalities related to the increased desire to use the Hybrid cars. Additionally, the text does not prioritize the available evidence in comparing the fuel consumption rates between the two models. It only provides the related theoretical examples that are relevant to the questions’ contents. Text 2 addresses all the parts and achieves the objective of the assignment. For instance, it illustrates the carbon emission strategies that can be developed in the market. It gives more information on the available procedure for making legal policies by the government to reduce carbon emission rates through paying for taxes. The text opens up the need to charge manufacturers to promote innovative ideas and hence improve the status of the economy by providing better options that can reduce the costs of production. However, Text 1 broadly conceptualizes the advantages of buying the Hybrid cars by stating the available products that exist in the market such as the Toyota Prius. Text 1 compels consumers to purchase hybrid cars with reference to their little fuel consumption rates per mile rather than on their eco-friendly basis. Consequently, the content does not match the requirements, and hence fails to meet the objectives of the assignment. On the contrary, Text 2 describes the relationship that exists in ICE cars to Hybrid cars on the range of time for charging stations. It also addresses the need for individuals to spend more time recharging their cars as opposed to the ICE cars within their working environments. The text establishes the available strategies that manufacturers use in coping up with the expanding markets. The industry seeks to create a network for charging points that will help consumers meet their daily prerequisites. However, the ICE cars are considered advantageous due to the consistent availability of fuelling points, but fails due to their negative emissions. Both texts have a conclusion that relates to the question asked as well as the issues, which were set out in the introduction. The only difference is the extent to which they relate. Text 1 does not have much relationship, but the author has tried to restate the thesis, but failed to mention the critics issue in the conclusion. Instead, the author brings about other issues that were not highlighted in the introduction. Nevertheless, the conclusion tries to summarize the findings. The introduction and conclusion in text 2 lime and are completely related. The conclusion addresses the issues set out in the introduction. The vocabulary in the two texts is appropriate both academically and disciplinary-wise. Few problems with grammar and errors are evident in both texts. The authors miss some commas, especially between clauses. Other errors are in article usage, verb and subject agreement among others. Text 1 does not use any visual information. Text 2 has used visual information extensively. Graphs have been used to show the advantages of Hybrid Cars on stability and the effects of reducing accidents that have constantly led to the loss of human life. The student has used diagrams and figures to emphasize and provide evidence in support of hybrid cars. The visuals are relevant to the content and described appropriately. An example is figure 4, which shows the numbers of accidents per HEV and ICEat 8,387 HEVs and 559,703 ICE vehicles that met the selection criteria. Cases Included in the Study HEVs ICE Vehicles Total Number of Vehicles Included in Analysis 8,387 559,703 Pedestrians Involved in Crashes 77 3,578 Bicyclists Involved in Crashes 48 1,862 Figure 4 Cases included in the analysis Text 2 is clearly laid out and formatted using subheadings and a table of content to guide the reader. However, the table of content lacks page numbers to the highlighted areas. Text 1 is laid out in paragraphs, but it is not easily readable because one has to start from the beginning to the end in order to flow with the information. Contrarily, Text 2 has subheadings for each section to guide the reader and hence one can read any part without having to start from the beginning. In essence, the authors in both texts attempted to capture most of the information and evidence to support their claims. However, text 2 should receive the most credit because the writer seems organized and knowledgeable of the subject matter than in text 1. Otherwise, the two texts deliver their messages in a formal and clear way such that one is convinced that hybrid cars are the way to go. Read More
