? Eliseo Meifren y Roig (1859–1940) El Nocturno This painting is without a It has been necessary to analyse each period of his art work to understand how it has changed in order to realize that El Nocturno was from the early 20th century when he was not yet living in Majorca. It is the intention of the writer to give examples of each style and to show you his progression. There are still some serious doubts as to the year . As a conclusion, a decision will be made as to what period El Nocturno belongs. The periods that will be discussed are the Impressionist, the Romanticism, the Barbizon School, the Neo Classicist, ending his use of El Modernissimo in the last period of his life. A note must be made as to the sources used. The names of his paintings are in English, French and Spanish. Please forgive the variations of language, the purpose of the paper is to show the styles of the paintings. He is a Spanish painter who specialized in Impressionism, to Romanticism stretching to neo-Classism to with his use of colour and lines. He ends is last period in the Modernist School as you see in his Jardin a Majorque which is currently being exhibited in El Modernissimo… The Spanish school of painters is not well known in our day except for the exposition currently being held in Switzerland: El Modernissimo De Sorolla a Picasso, 1880-1918. In the late 19th century there was a cultural renaissance in Europe. The intellectual circles which were known in Paris also appeared in other cities all over Europe. Catalonia re-established its language, poems were written, music was composed and artists joined together to talk about their works. The famous bar, Quatre Gats, had the artists of the renaissance who travelled between Paris and Barcelona. Picasso was also known to drink his coffee though there is no note in their having met. Meifren y Roig started out in Medical school. After one year, he went to Escuela de la Llotja in Barcelona. In 1880, he went to Paris where he associated himself with the Peintres de Barbizon. The school of Barbizon was a group of painters who were located in a village next to the Fontainebleau forest. By 1880, they had already dissipated but their style still existed. They worked the 'd'apres nature' of landscapes and countryside. When he came to Paris the first time, he was influenced by the impressionist school. El Nocturno (Palma de Mallorca) Eliseo Meifren Y Roig. does not have a date. One can assume that it is late in his career as a painter for several reasons. On his first trip to Paris he studied impressionism. El Nocturno does not use the pastel colours or the soft blending of the brush. His "Spanish Ballerinas" is an example of his rendition of the influence of the impressionist. The Terrace shows his use of the Impressionist and the Barbizon school. It doesn't show the use of light from his time spent in Italy studying. It does not show the influence of the Barbizon school because it is not a true landscape. In comparison, an example of one of the influence of the Barbizon school would be an early version of El Marne or the Fishing Pool. His other paintings of the countryside do not have the one blue colour he uses in El Nocturno. In his first year in Paris, he often painted pictures of ballet dancers and circus players. His Spanish Ballerinas shows an early style of his time in Paris. We have dated his earlier works as being impressionist in style. Then he goes to the Barbizon school of landscape and countryside artists. His Nocturne Scene which is undated corresponds perfectly. His work coincides with the end of realism and naturalism and starts the Catalonian Renaissance and modernism. When he became director of the School of Beaux Arts in Majorqua in 1907, his style had changed to resemble the blue waters surrounding the island. As an example of an earlier work the waters surrounding the island are in a pastel blue of the impressionist movement when he moved to take the job, his bleu became bright cyan. Here are two examples: Bahia de Palma& Paisaje de Palma which shows a calm natural Barbizon blue. An additional painting, Deia Coast, Majorca also has the cyan blue as the Bahia de Palma. Though there are no dates on these paintings, we can assume that the second painting represents his early period. His first painting represents his modernist painting after 1907. His painting Majorca also showed the beautiful blue he used for this special ocean. It was done between 1907 and 1908. (Prado ) He spends his time between Barcelona and Paris until 1893, when he starts travelling. He becomes a world success. He has multiple expositions in America and in South America between 1893 and 1912.. He spends his time between Barcelona and Paris until 1893, when he starts travelling. He becomes a world success. He has multiple expositions in America and in South America between 1893 and 1912.. He spends his last days on the Island of Majorca. There is a change in his painting as seen by the colour of cyan. Where does El Nocturno come from. If we don't look at the colour, it is a typical late period painting of Turner. The predominate colour, Meifren had never used in any of his other paintings. it would be assumed that this is in his neo-classism because of the colour and the billowing cloud and soon to start his El Modernissimo. The clouds have been used. The lights on the horizon are magnificent. The depth of the painting is magnificent. His works are shown in some of the biggest museums and private collects worldwide today though n interesting comment can be made as to why such a prolific artist has not had his work catalogued. In doing the research in identifying his schools , there is no information multiple blogs have been used and general searching on "images" on the google. The information gathered for this analysis is highly subjective as there is no documented proof. El Nocturno is an oil painting of a barren sandy beach with abandoned boats. The same scene can be seen in one of Turner's paintings. The lights on the horizon are a contrast to the darkness of the island. The billowy clouds show a weakness of Meifren as they show a lack of technique than from most artists of the turn of the century but the lighting on the ocean is exquisite. This neo-classism was used while he taught at the School of Beaux Art. This is a subjective comment. An example in El Modernissmo would be PAISAJE CON RIO.
