Just as Gustav Mahler once said, “If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music.” One of the most distinguished composers of the 19th century is Frédéric Chopin. Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist, and is considered by many as the epitome of the Romantic style in classical music.

Regarded as a child prodigy pianist, I look up to him, as my model and inspiration, since I too, play the piano. Chopin’s works are masterpieces and mainstays of the Romanticism in the 19th century. One of the major innovations in forms of music that he was responsible for is the nocturne. The nocturne is basically a work of art dealing with evening or night, usually a dreamy pensive piano composition. Having written 21 of these, Chopin’s nocturnes are written in a somewhat melancholy style, with an expressive dreamy melody, over broken-chord accompaniment.

The major of Chopin’s nocturnes adopt a simple A-B-A form, wherein the A part is usually in a dreamy style, and the B style is a part of a more dramatic content. Considering the melody, harmony, and originality of piano style, Chopin’s nocturnes leave other composers behind, although his style is very much similar with Bellini’s cavatina. Chopin’s nocturnes is appealing to most music lovers of the classical genre, as it evokes emotions, such as ardor, peacefulness, serenity, and tranquility, as well as, purging some sudden doubts and worries, and anxieties.

The nocturnes are full of drama, often giving the listener a feeling of hypnotic beauty reflected through each note played. This music is very much alluring to me as it stirs in me the feelings of reflection, serenity, and a certain deep feeling that I may define as nostalgia. It defines in myself a part of thinking deeply, feeling deeply, and inspiring a more productive me. As well as the romanticism in these pieces capture my side of ardor, which is something that I cannot find in the music of today’s artists.

Music today, especially those that are very much appealing to the people of the younger generation, tend to express emotion through its lyrics rather than its melody and harmony. Contemporary music, especially in the r&b, pop, alternative, rock, reggae, and heavy metal genre, convey the feelings of the music through the lyrics, while the melody usually stay similar from one song to another. Feelings of nostalgia, serenity, and reflection cannot be realized in these songs. These songs usually evoke feelings of frustration, anger, regret, and lust.

Chopin’s nocturnes are very much special to me as this inspires a more substantial individual in me, as well as evoke a healthier person in me – emotionally. These night pieces stirs up in me feelings that help me face events in my life, my experiences, and shape me into a better person. Indeed, Chopin is one of the greatest composers of all time, and he continues to inspire millions more with his music, centuries after.
