Learning of English Course - Essay Example

I believe that one of my strengths is my proper use of punctuations and correct grammar. I am meticulous about this as I have found that reading something out loud that is grammatically incorrect is hard on the ears. Also, throughout this course, I found that I am quite good at creating transitions so that sentences and paragraphs flow logically and smoothly from one to the next. Because of this, I am able to argue in a logical manner that my readers can accept my position as rational. On the other hand, I feel that my weakness is being able to stay within page length as I noticed that I tend to write long paragraphs that I have had to shorten my papers before I hand them in so as not to appear to be too lengthy.

Wordiness is also a weakness of mine in that I tend to babble and write long sentences that sometimes may make my point unclear and inconsistent. I plan to read and reread my papers before I submit them so that I will be able to check what sentences are unnecessary, vague, or too long. In this way, I will be able to make the necessary revisions so that my essays will be more polished, logical, and organized. Despite these weaknesses, I can say that English 1020 has really helped my writing skills as, not only have I learned what my strengths are, I have also learned to write in a more organized and logical manner through peer and personal revisions.

Furthermore, I think that I am able to critically read the assigned readings and respond to them better by reading paragraphs and sentences again until I think I have grasped what the authors are trying to say. In this way, I am able to respond more appropriately. I intend to continue taking criticisms constructively in the future so that I may be able to further improve my writing skills.
