Politics and the English Language George Orwell wrote an article d “Politics and the English Language” during the period of 1946 and the purpose of this literary work was to criticize the way contemporary prose writers used English language in their writings and he considers their usage of English language as misleading and disgusting (Orwell, 1946). The tone used by Orwell to get his message through is a harsh one and he uses direct critical words to describe the way English language is used in a wrong manner.
For example: he uses the terms “ugly”, “inaccurate” and “foolish” to refer o the way English Language is being used. The targeted audience is both the readers and the writers, he targets the readers as he wants them to know how the writer’s are manipulating and destroying the way English Language should be used and he targets the writers as he wants them to change their stance. The examples of text he uses to make his point are not the worst examples as he states that he could have used examples that are very bad.
He refers to these examples as below average and containing the issues he wants to talk about to his readers. The author has taken a political stance on the topic; he believes that the usage of English language is conducted in a wrong manner due to political reasons. He states that English writers are exploiting the readers and making them think positive about something negative taking place around them in their environment. Works CitedOrwell, George.
