I agree with Troy Davis's view, in academic writing, we often write to a teacher who is more knowledgeable than the students. The student should write to showcase how well he understood the topic or a concept taught in class. In business writing, this is not the case as the document may be read by unlimited readers who will not be committed to reading your document unless it helps them carry out a task or solve a problem.

I don’t agree that college writing is more formal or professional than business writing. When doing a document for instance a proposal, the paper should be neat and well-aligned as this tells more about your company and may help in winning a deal. In academic writing, a writer will be penalized by his teacher for not following a certain writing style and this will lead to bad grades. Whereas in business writing you won’t be penalized, bad documents may lead to loss of business.
