Mrs. Mallard received the news from Josephine, her sister, who delivered the news in broken sentences since the widow had a heart problem. In addition, both stories do not have a good ending despite having begun in a troubling way. In Mrs. Mallard’s case, following the news of her husband’s death, she sobbed to the point of worsening her heart problem, which eventually killed her. In the Lesson, the kids had bad perception of Miss Moore who ended up frustrating them. In both instances, there is a loss or wastage of something. Mrs. Mallard’s family lost two people while the storyteller claimed that Miss Moore had wasted their time. Both stories explain transition of instances from one place to a different. In the Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard moves from her present position and locks herself in a room but later unlocks the door due to her sister’s importunities. On the other hand, the storyteller and her friends accompany Miss Moore to a toy store and then back home. Moreover, comparison is used in both stories. Mrs. Mallard carried herself like a “goddess of victory”. In the Lesson, many things are compared such as people talking behind Miss Moore’s back like a dog and Big Butt wasting his butter like a pig. In contrast, in the Lesson, informal language is used for the bigger part of the story indicating that the audience could have been age mates of the storyteller. Some of the words used to indicate informality include shit and bitch. Personification is used in the Lesson but the other case uses real names. The storyteller in the Lesson uses personification in the names of the friends that include Mercedes, Butt and Giraffe. Usage of words is also different. While the Lesson uses shortening of words, the narrator in the Story of an Hour uses ideal English language words. Some of the shortened non-standard words used in the Lesson include kinda, oughta, and outta. The subjects used in both narratives are different. In the Lesson, the narrator uses children who are taken to a store to buy dolls while all the characters used in the Story of an Hour are adults. In the Story of an Hour, the narrator creates a mood of grief and sorrow while in the Lesson the mood is fun for the kids. Symbolism has been applied in the Lesson but not in the Story of an Hour. It is evident through the usage of words such as Mercedes, which could have been used to mean a kid from a wealthy family. Additionally, Big Butt could have been used to mean that the kid was fat. Usage of pronouns is also different. For instance, the narrator in the Lesson uses first person, second person, and third person while in the Story of an Hour first person is not used. In the Lesson, the narrator talks about themselves while in the Story of an Hour, the narrator talks about a different individual and their ordeal. A judgmental attitude is used in the Lesson but not applied in the Story of an Hour. The ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
