Both stories involve people with close relationships. Mrs. Mallard received the news from Josephine, her sister, who delivered the news in broken sentences since the widow had a heart problem. In addition, both stories do not have a good ending despite having begun in a troubling way. In Mrs. Mallard’s case, following the news of her husband’s death, she sobbed to the point of worsening her heart problem, which eventually killed her. In the Lesson, the kids had bad perception of Miss Moore who ended up frustrating them.

In both instances, there is a loss or wastage of something. Mrs. Mallard’s family lost two people while the storyteller claimed that Miss Moore had wasted their time. Both stories explain transition of instances from one place to a different. In the Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard moves from her present position and locks herself in a room but later unlocks the door due to her sister’s importunities. In the Story of an Hour, the narrator creates a mood of grief and sorrow while in the Lesson the mood is fun for the kids. Symbolism has been applied in the Lesson but not in the Story of an Hour. It is evident through the usage of words such as Mercedes, which could have been used to mean a kid from a wealthy family.

Additionally, Big Butt could have been used to mean that the kid was fat. Usage of pronouns is also different.
