There are a lot of debate on the reliability and verifiable nature of the on line resources but at the same time the works carried out by the internet resources are stupendous. For instance, if a person wants to know about the origin of Homo sapiens he or she can get hundreds of sites in a single click provided that the user should have the distinguishing capacity on the reliability of the contents he or she receives. So the present article plunges into a study on the reliable and verifiable aspect of internet resources much exclusively and tries to bring out a comparative study on the reliability of traditional library and internet library.
The books were considered a great resource in the previous era and as a matter of fact, these helped in developing the knowledge of people in all fields. The libraries, where the books were kept, turned out to be the places of great wisdom. Scholars flowed in abundance to these places and hence these places were of great importance. People could rely on these great books but at the same time only a few benefited from it. On the other hand as the time passed the scholars who had to take pains to get access to these libraries then shifted to on line resources.
It is primarily due to the emergence of communication technologies and thereby internet. The books of the traditional libraries are limited whereas the access to internet resources is limitless. “It is a library without walls. It is a library that does not need to accession, catalogue, or organize information” (Norman14). The linking of different libraries of the world helped the scholars to get the accessibility to these resources easily. The Independent gives out the data of internet users worldwide as 2 billion and the number of mobile phone users has grown up to five million.
It further says, “With the world’s population exceeding 6.8 billion, nearly one person in three surfs online” (The independent). The increasing growth of internet users in the world is an example for the increasing rate of resource transmission among the people. All could not get access to the traditional libraries whereas the new internet library resources brought new dimensions to the researchers and other knowledge lovers. For example, the traditional libraries were the difficult access for the disabled persons and when the internet or digital libraries came into being the persisting problem was solved.
John Carlo Bertot et al comment, “The majority of public libraries now have mission statements explicitly asserting that the library provides equal access and services to all patrons, including persons with disabilities.” (Bertot, McClure & Charles178). So the large access of information is widely possible in the internet library resources. The internet library information or resources play a key role in the present world. Even though some debates are against this it stands as reliable and verifiable.
The writers like G.E. Gorman and Ruth H. Miller clearly make out the differences between the traditional resources and the internet resources as, “Internet resources tend to be dynamic, while traditional resources tend to be static” (Gorman & Miller 41). More over the writers state that the problem of duplication is a less in internet resources as many sites provide links to the original sources. Thus internet library resources are carrying reliability and verifiable aspect. In contrast with the positive side of the
