Introduction The lesson plan outlines the content that will be used in guiding instructors on how to conduct their lessons. The plan contains sub-contents that have clear objectives regarding the outcome of the main course. In essence, an instructor often comes up with a lesson plan to help guide them on how they will deliver the course content, and also how they will examine their students with the ultimate goal of maximizing the objectives of the teaching and learning experience. The key factor that guides the teacher in developing the lesson plan is the learning needs of their students. These learning needs are often stated in the course’s objectives. Essentially, the teacher ought to lower themselves into the shoes of the students when developing the lesson plans for maximum benefit of learning experience. In this case, the lesson plan will be student-based and not teacher-based. Generally, a lesson plan should have four segments. The first segment is meant to introduce the topic at hand. This segment ought to capture the attention of the students through commanding their active participation. The second segment concerns itself with the development of the lesson. In this segment the teacher will explain the expected objectives of the learning experience. These objectives will form the basis of student examination with the intention of determining whether or not the lesson was taught as expected. The third segment assesses the level of comprehension. It is the foundation upon which the teacher will determine whether or not the course concept has been learned. The fourth and final segment represents the phase where the teacher will conclude the lesson. At this stage, the teacher ought to be aware whether they should transition to the next topic or teach the current topic again. The basis for this judgment will be based on whether or not the students demonstrate an outright comprehension of the topic. If the topic is well comprehended, the instructor moves to the next topic and if not, they re-teach the current topic. This paper will outline a lesson plan for Burpengary State Secondary School, Burpengary, QLD. School Context Burpengary State Secondary School was recently opened in 2015 with year 7 and 8 students. It is expected that by the year 2019, the school’s first year 12 students will be graduating. Currently, the school is a government school with an enrolment of over 690 students (52% boys and 48% girls) and a staff of 79 (54 teaching, and 25 non-teaching). The schools current Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) ICSEA stands at 985 against a recommended average value of 1,000. In essence, the higher the value of ICSEA, the higher the quality and the level of educational advantage of the pupils who go to a particular school. 4 % of the school’s student body is composed of indigenous students likewise to 4% of students who also speak a language other than English. The foundational principles, vision, mission, values, logo, sport, and formal uniform of the school reflect a stable community that aims at achieving higher expectations and outcomes for its students. The school’s context is such that it is large enough to cater for the needs of the students using its core, elective and innovative programs, but also small enough to narrow down on each of the educational needs of the students. Current Issue or Innovation Pedagogy is the method and practice used in delivering content from the teacher to the learner. The learning sector is largely dynamic. Recently, there have been radical changes taking place in the education sector. In Queensland, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) is charged with the development, examination, and review of the curriculum for schools. The main pedagogical change being experienced and instituted now is the use of technology to enhance the learning experience (Burke et al., 2018). In essence, the pedagogy is becoming technologically relevant. Currently, the school curriculum acknowledges the use of notable search engines and relevant website as a means of obtaining additional information that is significant for enhancing the learning experience. Curriculum Content In line with the first graduating year 12 class in 2019, Burpengary State Secondary School has released the year 11 and 12 Subject Book for 2019. This subject is in line with Queensland’s Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines. The business syllabus lays emphasis on how business is relevant to every individual especially in the present-day when the world is technologically-focused, rapidly changing, and driven by innovation. The syllabus introduces the learners to authentic and real life practices that will equip them with knowledge and skills that are critical in enabling them to make meaningful contribution to the society, the workforce, and the marketplace as a whole. Moreover, the syllabus equips the learners to be employers, future leaders, managers, entrepreneurs of the current age and the future. Differential Assessment Differential Assessment is the examination of a learner’s ability with the intention of determining whether or not they have understood and captured the core concepts of a particular lesson. Differential assessment is critical in helping the teacher identify the specific students who have not comprehended the topic that was taught. There are various metrics that instructors use in differential assessment to distinguish between the students that have comprehended the key concepts and those who have not. However, these metrics are subject to the teacher’s judgment. The most common methods of assessment that are used in differential assessment include formative assessment and summative assessment. The formative assessment will be done at the end of each lesson to determine whether or not the students have understood the topic of the day. Students will be organized in groups of three and each of the students in the groups will be given a question to defend themselves in ten minutes. The rest of the students take important notes, examine the work of the students, and ultimately rate the work of their colleagues. Weekly Summative Assessment The following will be examined using summative assessment: Identification of a gap in the market; development of a viable business idea and a business plan as an entrepreneur, conduct a complete environmental assessment (PESTEL and SWOT) of the ever-dynamic business environment. Describe the various key functions of business (accounting, finance, economics, human resource, and marketing), how they affect the business, and how the various managers of these functions can harness efficiency and effectiveness towards the good of the business. Determine the various factors of the business environment that ought to be taken into consideration before setting up a business and also in the running of a particular business entity. By the end of the semester, the students should have completed a business research project that contains an environmental assessment of their idea and a business plan that will guide the setting up of their business. The project will be analyzed weekly and relevant adjustments made before final submission at the end of the semester. The project document is expected to have 3000 words (± 10%) and will demonstrate an understanding of the business environment, strategic planning, and the key functions of the business. End of semester Literacy and Numeracy This segment of learning explores the basic literacy and numeracy concepts of business. This segment will contain selected important concepts that are critical in equipping the students with the fundamental literacy and numeracy skills that are important for the workplace (employees) and business (owners) as a whole. The syllabus shall also incorporate the teaching of problem solving through practical exercises in reading, listening, and formal writing. Literacy learning also employs syntax that is relevant to business communication to ensure that the learners are acquainted with the necessary business terminology. The numerical aspect of the syllabus shall equip the learners with mathematical skills relevant to business. In this case, the course shall contain information that shall be computed and interpreted numerically.
