Lesson Plan Affirmation The lesson plan will of be great importance because through it, one will not only have prior knowledge of what he or she is to teach but also enable him or her assess stability as well as that of the learners. Content Summary A mini saga is normally a short form of writing, normally fifty words, formulated by Brian Aldiss a professional writer specialized in science fiction. The fifty words in a mini saga must comprise of three sections, which are beginning, middle and end with the exclusion of a title. Mini sagas play a major role in short writing lessons because apart from being easy to read and comprehend, focuses on accuracy hence making it motivating especially to learners (“British Council”). Art Standards Mini Saga lessons normally have three main objectives; Aiding in acquiring necessary skills Helping learners augment their editing skills Assist learners in comprehension of the main difference between quality and quantity writing. Proper addressing of these objectives enable learners be in a position to write short stories that are not only complete but also creative. Secondly, teaching students on proper editing skills will result to the learners applying them effectively on their writing. Finally, learners will be in a position to write brief contents that are of high quality, this is due to their comprehension of the difference between quality writings and quantity. Engage and Inspire Since writing an outstanding mini saga requires a lot of creativity, I will ensure that I psychologically prepare the students for the lesson. First, I will introduce the topic by writing the word “Saga” on the board before asking students if they have any prior knowledge of the term. After informing them that a Saga is a long story normally comprising of heroic events or something dramatic, I will proceed to state that the day’s lesson will not be on “saga” but “mini saga”, an implication that it will be brief. Once the class is aware of the day’s lesson, I will start by first defining the term Mini saga as a brief form of writing, normally has exactly fifty words excluding the title. The fifty word mini saga comprises of three sections, which are beginning, middle and end. I will then state a brief history of the mini saga by stating that Brian Aldiss is the man behind this form of writing. The main reason why Aldiss came up with the mini saga form of writing is that according to him, telling a story in a few words not only was it fun but also a challenging experience (“British Council”). After ensuring the class has full knowledge on the term mini saga, I will begin the lesson teaching them on how to come up with an appropriate and magnificent mini saga. Learners will participate in a classroom discussion where they will display their writing and editing skills. Answering questions and discussing with others will also portray and advance these skills. Share and Reflect Once the class is aware of mini sagas and methods of writing them, the next step will be dividing them in pairs before asking them to come up with their own mini sagas. I will issue each pair with a prompt, which will assist them in focusing on their writing. First, each pair is to brainstorm the prompt and write a brief draft without putting much consideration on the word count. Once each pair is done with writing, the pairs are to swap their drafts so that each pair has a different one in which they are to identify and correct errors such as grammar, spelling and punctuations. After correcting errors, each pair is to receive its draft and check the corrected errors. Finally, I will ask the pairs to come up with a final draft, which unlike the first one, will be more accurate since the total word count will be put to into consideration. I will reiterate the fact that the mini saga apart from having a maximum of fifty words, it also ought to have a title. After each pair completes writing its mini saga, I will place the mini sagas alongside their corresponding prompts around the classroom before directing the students to read each other’s draft before finally voting for the best mini saga. Student assessment The assessment will be in three tasks; Mini dialogues, Mini saga reading and writing. Mini dialogues In this task, I will demonstrate a writing activity on the board in which students will be required to participate fully in a move to enable them understand how to come up with short sentences that are not only grammatically correct but also comprehensible. I will write a single line of dialogue on the board, for instance, Did you visit Africa last year? After asking the students to confirm that the sentence comprises of six words, I will move to the next step and ask them to continue with the dialogue stressing on the fact that each sentence following the first one ought to be one word less. The next sentence ought to have five words for instance, No. I visited Europe instead. The dialogue ought to continue until it ends with one word e.g. Which city? Madrid. Learners should repeat the same activity in pairs. Each learner should start by writing the first line of dialogue with at least six words. The learners should then exchange papers and each learner should continue with their partner’s dialogue by reducing the number of words one by one. I will reiterate the fact that contractions such as “don’t” are two words. After proofreading the dialogues for errors as soon as the learners finish, I will allow learners to make any necessary changes on the dialogues in case there are errors before finally displaying the dialogues on the walls so that all learners can access. Mini saga Reading In this task, I will write the definition of a mini saga on the board. A mini saga is a very short form of writing that Brian Aldiss, a science fiction writer invented. It is usually written in exactly 50 words that narrate a complete story. Its title, which is not part of the 50 words, should not exceed 15 words. A mini saga has three main parts: beginning, middle and end. Students find it interesting and motivating because it is easy to create. Since the definition comprises of 69 words, the task will require students to edit it by reducing the word count to fifty. As they reduce the number of words, the sentences should make sense and be grammatically correct. I will read the original mini saga aloud as soon as the learners finish writing. This will enable them compare the two and make any necessary corrections. Writing Once I am certain that each pair has all the necessary skills for writing a mini saga, the next step will be asking them individually to write one mini saga each. In a move to reduce their workload, I will write few concepts on the board such as description of their friends, other people, or objects; these will help them get some ideas on what they need to write.
