Therefore, it is very important that the students should be taught adequate to understand and use the language in every class before “learning the language” (Pimsarn, n.d, p.1). Teaching in these areas should be undertaken in an extensive manner, so that students can learn and attain “good language skills” (Pimsarn, n.d, p.1). Students should be encouraged to listen attentively while listening to others so that they can understand what is being said. Similarly, they must also be motivated to read aloud, so that when they speak to others they can articulate without inhibitions. Learning new words and how to pronounce them will also help them in acquiring better listening and speaking skills and to use the language confidently in their daily life. Listening Lesson Plan for Beginners level Teaching Vocabulary (Opposites) to ESL students Duration of the Class: 40 min Rationale: The students for whom English is a second language have a tough time listening to others and understanding them correctly. Therefore, teachers must help them acquire good listening and speaking skills by rendering the learning process interesting for the students. For beginner level, it is very important for the students to understand what others speak and learn whatever is taught in the class and to recall it whenever required. The play way method of teaching can more effective in making students understand various aspects of language easily. Teaching by way of interesting activities, involving all the students, is a much better way to make students learn and understand. It can be more fun as well as effective and successful than learning through oral teaching. Audience: Beginners in a public post secondary institute Goals: Improving students’ listening and speaking skills and making the students understand what is being said in the class so that they can understand the language in a better way. Objectives: Develop student’s understanding of spoken words and sentences To make students acquire the skills to listen properly to others To make student learn the language with accuracy Material: Computer, audio CDs, cards that contain some pictures of animals that are included in the CDs, charts showing similar animals. Procedure (Table-I): 1 Greeting The class will begin with the teacher asking the students to settle down and take out their books. 2 Revision The teacher will ask few questions from the students on the topic taught in the previous class. 3 Introduction The teacher holds up a picture card and asks a student to stand up and identify the picture in the card. This continues with 10 – 15 items. Then she repeats exercise individually for the whole class. Involve students in similar activity with animals in the chart also. 4 Explanation The teacher plays the audio CD and explains the characteristics of each animal to the whole class. 5 Activity The audio CD also explains some characteristics of the animals. Teacher points to individual animals in the chart and asks each student to identify two characteristics of each animal. 6 Assessment The teacher will assess the understanding of every student with their answers given. The teacher will then ask students to correct the incorrect answers. If still the answer is incorrect, the mistakes will be corrected by the teacher. 7 Homework The teacher asks the students to watch cartoon programs by identifying specific programs that contain simple and interesting stories. Next day, the teacher calls the students at random and asks them to tell two new words they learned from the program. This is repeated every day on rotation basis. Listening Lesson Plan for Intermediate level Topic: Developing Listening and speaking skills of ESL students Duration of the Class: 40 min Rationale: For the intermediate level, apart from simple listening exercises, the teachers will also give the students role playing activities. At this level, the teacher should focus on giving more and more examples to the students for enabling better listening and speaking skills. In this manner, it will be easier for the teacher to know whether the students are able to understand correctly the words and sentences they listen to. Audience: Intermediate level in a public post secondary institute Goals: Helping students acquire listening and speaking skills appropriate to intermediate level. Objective: Develop students’ listening to clearly understand spoken communication To make students listen accurately Enhance their skills in listening Material: Story books, audio CDs, video CDs Procedure: 1 Greeting The class will begin with the teacher asking the students to settle down and take out their books. 2 Revision The students may be asked some questions on the topic taught in the previous class. 3 Introduction The teacher will introduce the topic in the class. The teacher will ask one student to stand up and hand him/her the story book with the instruction to read a specific story aloud. 4 Explanation The teacher will explain to the students the pronunciation and meaning of new words that appear in the story and make some students at random to repeat the word and its meaning aloud. Identify the role body language in communication and explain the way of interpreting body language. Explain how body language can effectively be used while speaking. 5 Activity The teacher will ask students at random to assume the role of characters in the story. She will play the audio CD which has the same story. Students will first listen to the record and repeat the dialogue of the characters. Follow up video of the same story with sound on mute, students follow lip move. 6 Assessment Teacher will assess each student with their response and evaluate how well they have been able to comprehend the dialogues. In case of students who show difficulty in listening, the teacher provides tips for the better understanding of the spoken language 7 Homework Teacher instructs students to watch news channels such as CNN and other informative resources to gain better listening and speaking skills. Next day, teacher asks students at random to provide a brief of any program so he/she can assess improvement in their listening apart from encouraging them to speak out in the class to attain better speaking skills. Grammer Lesson Plan for Advanced Level Topic: Enhancing listening and speaking skills of ESL students by way of additional audio visual aids. Duration of the Class: 40 min Rationale: Such strategies will help students in acquiring better listening and speaking skills. Audience: Advanced level in a public post secondary institute Goals: To enhance students’ listening and speaking skills Objective: Develop student’s listening and speaking skills Enable them to understand different accents Material: Computer, Audio/video CDs, sample listening skill tests from exams like TOEFL, IELTS etc Procedure: 1 Greeting The class will begin with the teacher asking the students to settle down and take out their books/laptops. 2 Revision Students are asked some questions on the topic taught in the previous class. Teacher also verifies and assesses the activities given as homework. 3 Introduction The teacher plays the audio CD. After completing the explanation and activity parts relating to it, he/she proceeds to play the video CD. 4 Explanation He/she explains the contents of the audio and video CD and the procedures for role play, as well as how it can benefit the students. He/she also provides them clues on how to focus on listening and also on the steps that will improve their speaking. Teacher also emphasizes the use of body language in communication and provides hints as to how emotions can be better communicated through gestures and body language. Also he/she explains the need for pausing and maintaining eye contact while speaking. 5 Activity The teacher asks students question to determine the extent to which they have understood the contents of both audio and video CDs, then instructs students to engage in role play and use the same dialogues used in the CD. Similar activity with video CD. He/she then gives the listening to random students and assesses their scores. 6 Assessment Teacher will assess every student with the answers given and their participation in the activity. He/she determines through the result the individual need for improvement in each case and provides guidance accordingly. In addition, the teacher may give assignments to students where they will have to read extra books apart from their syllabus including fiction. This will help them learn new words so they can recognize such words when spoken by others. Similarly, students will also be encouraged to write essays, short stories containing dialogues and poems where they will use a spoken language. This will help them both in recognizing the patterns of dialogues as well as presenting dialogues, with constant practice.
