Winners & Losers The game-changer – iPad Introduction The topic of the article is “Winners & Losers 2010: The game-changer – iPad” and, it was published in 2010. (Castaldo , 2010) The main theme of the article was to exemplify how the introduction of iPad has revolutionized the technology market and the future courses taken by the product based organizations. The generalized topic was about identifying the successful and failed products that were released in the year. This edition of the article deals with the most successful product released that year - the iPad. Introduced by the CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, the Apple iPad was the first of its kind to reach the market and one that somehow fits into the category between the mobile devices and the laptop. There have been many implications in the market since its arrival and the article concisely lists out the pre-arrival scenarios and the post-arrival impacts of the iPad. Background Although iPad was the first product to enter into the market in the tablets sector, it was actually Bill Gates who first introduced such a device in the year 2000. But, Microsoft’s device faltered heavily due its slow processing speeds and tedious presentation. Steve Jobs on the other hand, followed his own path and released a similar device that went on to overcome the disadvantages of Microsoft’s device. So, what was sought to be the revolutionary product in 2000 failed to garner the markets attention and it was totally wiped off its existence with the introduction of iPad. The success of iPad is so much and so expulsive that the topic aptly suits the content of the article. That is, iPad is the real game-changer. Pre-Arrival Scenario of the iPad Before its introduction, there was a lot of hype related to its introduction. Obviously with the success of iPod and the iPhone, which revolutionized the gadgets in their respective industries, any hype related to iPad was justifiable. But, at the same time, there were several other speculations related to its introduction. With the mobile markets and laptop markets having firmly established and many other companies ruling the roost over there, there was haziness related to what this product could avail to its user. Many people believed that this is just an extension of iPod allowing users to view videos and perform similar operations in a relatively big screen. Even when it arrived on to the scene, few were of the opinion that the product would fail miserably with no camera, no flash and with its one-application at a time processor. The cost of the product was considered to be a heavy setback for its sales. Many predicted that these drawbacks would pose as serious threats to the sales of the product but to everyone’s surprise, the case wasn’t to be so. Business issues Purpose and Market Sales The iPad was introduced with the basic intention of allowing users to satisfy most of their needs that they could do with the mobile phone and a laptop. With the technological advancements happening at a rapid place, the age of installing software in hard drives and working locally were long gone. Nowadays, it is all about accessing the software online and performing the operations on the move. With the accessibility to internet greatly increased with the presence of Wi-Fi almost everywhere, people’s attention were all transferred to a more compact device that provides greater screen size to work on with relentless speed. The iPad appeared at the right time and answered all their concerns. Its customer satisfaction rate was the major reason for its huge success in the market. In just one year, it sold around a whopping 10 million in numbers in US and 15 million, globally. Its introduction also led to the laptops and mobile gadget markets to greatly dip. The successful Kindle from Amazon saw a dip in sales for the first time since its release after the introduction of iPad. The market issues and the impact of iPad on the market trends have been clearly explained in the article. Second order businesses – application developers Another market that was thrown wide open was the third party developers who designed apps for the iPad extensively. Most of the industries are getting greatly benefitted with the development of these apps that help them to reduce their work efforts greatly. For example, the health-care industry has been greatly benefitted with the apps that allow the doctors to retrieve patient information immediately. Not only the product market was revolutionized with this product but also other industries like the health-care (explained above) have also been greatly benefitted with this product. Giving a run for their money – the Competitors The stupendous success of the iPad has rushed the other product developers like Sony, Google, Dell etc. to follow the path of iPad. According to the article, what they have been primarily focusing on in their own product development was to work on the defects of the iPad. Obviously, the cost of the iPad, the privatization of the Apple OS and its products are the major drawbacks of the iPad. Although Jobs counter-argues such policies, many technology savvy critics believe that such arguments would not stand in the long run. Google’s Android, a free OS, is considered to be the primary competitor for the iPad. As it is free, it allows other developers to easily integrate it onto their devices and customize accordingly. Many believe that this allows for a cheap and at the same time best quality products to be delivered to the customers. Future Trends Although, there has been constant increase in the development of tablets from companies like Dell and HP, having introduced first in the market, the iPad is expected to hold its fort at least in the near future and continue to be the most wanted product of the people. Conclusion The article provides an analysis on several issues that have been revolutionized by the introduction of the iPad. The current status of the market, the evolution of new products from its competitors and, the ability of the iPad to hold its front irrespective of the competition has been thoroughly explained in the article. In order to emphasize more on the magnanimity of the impact of this product in the commercial market as well is in other industries, an analysis could be done on the product’s influence in solving many complex issues in other industries.
