Extract of sample "Why Did I Get Married"

The first morning in the mountains was marked by serious arguments by all the couples. In the days that follow, serious revelations are made about each couple a factor that makes them plan their journey back. However, Sheila and Mike chose to divorce because of the infidelity while the other couples leave the mountains for home. The rest of the movie depicts the actions taken by the three remaining couples to reconcile at a point whereby they were tempted to separate. In the end, the three couples reconcile while Mike and Sheila remain separated.

Sheila moves on with Troy, whom she met on her journey to the mountains (Telsch n.p). The four couples face a dilemma of either separating from their partners or making the efforts to save their marriages. Some of the characters are struggling with infidelity or the loss of interest in their partners while others have focused on careers forgetting their marriage. Through the four couples, the audiences identify different causes of tensions in their marriages (Telsch n.p). Who were the most significant characters in the movie?

Describe why they were important, impressive, or influential. What choices do the main characters face? How do their decisions affect their own lives and the lives of other characters? Which characters did you identify with most and why? Provide examples of experiences within your own life that might draw a parallel, connect, or identify with one or more of the character’s lives. The most significant characters in this movie are Terry and Diane. Terry is the organizer and the coordinator of the retreat that brings the coupes together and targets to ensure that they resolve their marital differences.

On the other end, Diane is also significant in this because she represents the challenges facing African American women as they struggle to strike a balance between career and family. Although she has a family comprising of her husband and her daughter, she finds it challenging to dedicate time to her family. She focuses on her career which takes up most of her time and attention. Terry is compelled to make a critical choice regarding his family when he realizes that his wife has undergone tubal ligation and did not have the interest to dedicate time to her family.

After he leaves her, she goes to him begging after realizing her mistakes. At that point, Terry chooses to believe that she will change for the better and they reconcile (Telsch n.p). The choices that Terry makes affect his family positively hence saving his marriage. On the other hand, Diane's choices at the beginning of the movie strain her relationship with her husband and her daughter. However, when she realizes her mistakes, she reconsiders her choices. I identify most with Diane because of the challenges she faces in establishing her balance between family and career.

This is a typical challenge in the 21st century. From my experience, I grew up in a family where my mother was a career woman, but dedicated time to nurture her children. This is evidently parallel to Diane’s situation (Telsch n.p). Why do you think this movie was on the selection list? Why do you agree or disagree with the actions and outcome of the movie? What is the solution, outcome, or resolution of the problem or issue? What aspects of this film will stick with you over time? What are three (3) things you learned from viewing this film?

Explain why these three things are vital to your learning and how this knowledge will be helpful to you. This movie was on the selection list as it highlights issues regarding marriage which are of critical significance in modern society. I disagree with the actions of the husbands who are unfaithful to their wives, although I agree with their resolution to save their marriages in the end. After the couples struggle with their differences, three of them reconcile while one chooses to separate.

The retreat and the conflicts between the four couples define the aspect that I will never forget about this movie. By viewing this film, I learn that marriages have challenges and that it is the responsibility of both partners to resolve their differences and that separation should be the last resort when things fail ultimately. These three things are critical as they are centered on a social institution which is marriage. The knowledge obtained is applied on a personal basis in the future (Telsch n.p).
