The prominent themes that reflect from the details of the picture include drugs, depression, and social exclusion. The color combination used oozes darkness and depression. From the expressions on his face, the man seems to be totally unconcerned with the way this heavy smoking would affect his health. To make the man prominent against the background, the painter has made him wear a light green shirt whereas the background is black for the most part. The man is wearing a half-sleeves shirt. The room seems to be illuminated from yellow light pouring in the room from a window that is not shown in the picture.

The color of the smoke changes from white to yellowish-brown as the smoke particles capture light pouring into the room.
