The concept, which Gaicolea’s art seems to display, is that of family and this was clearly shown during his exhibition to his ancestral homeland of Cuba when the multigenerational family portrait, named Night Sitting, was put on exhibition. This portrait conveys the past celebrations of various generations of a family and the photographs that have been used in it have been digitally modified to look like the subjects of this portrait are sorrowful. Most of Gaicolea’s work shows a great deal of ambition because he combines so many different elements, which make his work unique. They tend to end up looking both mournful and magical but this outcome is not usually guaranteed because there are some pieces of his work, which have not turned out so well. In fact, some combinations Gaicolea has made evoke the feeling that they have been forced together and that it would have been better if the elements had been used separately.  Read More

Colonial America & American Art

...?Colonial America & American Art < < The two sources used for this assignment – H. Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, and W. Craven’s American Art, History and Culture, differ wildly in their presentation of the developments in the early history of the nation. They adopt completely different approaches to analyzing historical events and phenomena, but a close reading and comparison of both of these accounts provides a framework with which to explore the history and artistic culture of colonial and early federal periods, but also of other periods and places. What is most striking is their approach to social, economic and political inequality, a theme that has run deep throughout American history, and continues... , and with their oppression by elites, and his use of terms such as ‘class, even where it is inappropriate to do so. This is in contrast to the more conventional view of history taken by Craven. Craven’s book is essentially a catalogue of the styles and trends in art and architecture which have developed and flourished at different stages in American history. The historical summaries given at the beginning of each major section (i.e. Colonial America, Federal America etc.) are essentially a narrative of high political developments. The historical introduction given to the Federal period is a particularly good example. Having mentioned that the...
