Download file to see previous pages... In the 1920s, Ludwig von Bertalanffy, proposed the theory of systems theory. He claimed that real systems are subject to interaction with the environment and are highly likely to acquire new features and properties through emergence; thus, resulting to continuous progression. Rather than simply reducing the human body to the features of its organs, the theory prioritises on the apparent arrangement and relations between the main parts of the body that connects them and make them whole ( Barry 2002, pp. 110-112).
Systems theory is widely utilised in the field of social work in helping solve problems. For instance, it is used in dealing with people who are suffering from mental illness and assumes that every event or condition is directly related to the sequence of activities over a given period. Therefore, a deep comprehension of the theory allows the social workers to have a better perspective and predict the impact of a particular event. It also helps in understanding the historical and environmental effects on a mentally ill person. For that reason, social workers are able to work with the community and teach them on particular behaviours, their drawbacks and strengths, and ways they can support each other to avoid unintended health consequences (American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress 2014).
The concept of system is essential as it allows the social workers to work with the communities and look for the main cause of mental illness within the human’s supersystems and subsystems; hence, plan for rational therapeutic interventions. It also helps in determining the extent in which a client’s culture impacts their clinical rehabilitation as well as treatment from a mental illness.
