A review of literature indicates that young black men are more likely to become either victims or offenders of violent crime. The literature also makes a connection between ineffective policing and the rate of violent crime among ethnic minorities in areas like Lambeth where there is a high level of crime among young black men. In order to determine whether or not there is a link between the high level of violent crime among young black men and their relationship with police in Lambeth, a mixed-method approach to the study was taken. In this regard, a quantitative method was used in which data wass collected from a sample of 38 young black men in Lambet between the ages of 18 and 25 by the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire collected information about the respondent’s experiences with and attitudes toward police. Qualitative data was collected by virtue of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 10 black men between the ages of 18 and 25. The interviews were structured to obtain more in-depth and detailed information about the respondents experiences with and attitudes toward police in Lambeth. ...
The second chapter presents a review of literature. The third chapter presents the research methodology. The fourth chapter provides the results and analysis and the fifth chapter provides the conclusion to this study. Table of Contents Chapter One Introduction Data reported in the literature reveals that black men in general are disproportionately responsible for crime. In addition, black men are reportedly more likely to be victims of violent crimes than white men. For example, it has been reported in the literature that while 40.8 out of 1,000 white males are victims of crime while 51.2 out of every 1,000 black males are victims of crime. Homicide is reportedly the leading cause of death among young black men (Guarino-Ghezzi & Trevino, 2010). In a study conducted in the US by Pettit and Western (2004) administrative, survey and census data revealed that 3% of whites, 30% of blacks spend time in prison by the time they were 30. The study also found that 30% of black young men who did obtain a post-secondary education and 60% of those who failed to complete school ended up in prison (Pettit & Western, 2004). In the UK, data reveals that young black people between the ages of 10-17 are disproportionately represented at all phases of the criminal justice system. Although only 2.7% of the population between the ages of 10 and 17 are black. However, 8.5% of that black population are arrested in England and Wales. Black men are more likely be stopped and searched by law enforcement, are less likely to be admitted to bail and are more likely to be imprisoned than young white people (House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, 2007). It has been consistently reported in the literature that “people of colour” who live in “disadvantaged urban ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
