Gender theory provides a structural description of how relationships established from home can spillover to other relationships elsewhere (Mennino, Rubin and Brayfield 108). Gender theory has specific patterns of behaviors capable of constraining an individual within a given family or society. Despite being a positive tool in describing spillover from family to other domains, Mennino, Rubin and Brayfield (108) confirm that gender theory does not provide an adequate explanation for various family-friendly policies with respect to reduction of negative spillover.

On a different perspective, Menaghan and Parcel (69) identify family environments as the immediate source for enhancing children’s cognitive stimulation, as well as the affective experience, which is likely to explain how relationships established at home impact those of other domains. In their explanations, Menaghan and Parcel (69) claim that such immediate environments affect cognitive skills of children in addition to their academic potential and achievements. What’s more, such environments also have impact on children’s behavioral problems coupled with their emotional well-being (Menaghan and Parcel 69). . Marital relationships are important in creating within children the positive image of both internal and external environment (Menaghan and Parcel 70).

During the dissolution however, conflicts that precede separations as well as the struggle involved in starting a new life as single parents negatively affect the relationships that children have within home environment as well as in other domains (Menaghan and Parcel 71). Therefore, changes in parental relationships are likely to change children attributes hence affecting their relationships in other domains (Menaghan and Parcel 70). From the concepts of neo-classical policies, it is important therefore to have family-friendly policies enhancing the relationships of various individuals within a given family (Mennino, Rubin, and Brayfield 109).

Mennino, Rubin and Brayfield (109) social relations amongst individuals arise from everyday interactions coupled with formal rules as well as procedures capable of shaping all individuals in the organization (Mennino, Rubin, and Brayfield 109). Separated parents, therefore, will have no formal rules, every day interactions, or procedures capable of shaping their children, thus, likely to impact on their relationships in other domains (Mennino, Rubin, and Brayfield 109). Spillovers are highly determined by job circumstances, sex, individual household, and largely by gender systems as institutionalized with workplaces, economies, or families (Mennino, Rubin, and Brayfield 110).

Despite exhibiting some differences in spillovers between men and women, there is no doubt that gender plays a significant role in defining the relationships of individuals and how they affect other domains
