Legalizing drugs Table of Contents Introduction 3 Discussion 6 Conclusion 8 References 10 Introduction The term “Drugs” refers to an unethical substance in the society that is used widely for fun and joy which in-terms can be dangerous for an individual or society. Drugs reduce the brain’s ability to work appropriately because of inception of foreign elements in the body (Joslin, 2014, p.1). Different type of drugs was introduced in the world for production of medicines that could cure illness. However the direct consumption of these drugs is dangerous for the body. Nearly all drugs in the world have a direct or indirect effect on the brain and neuron-intercepts. The drugs imitate the natural chemical messengers released by the brain by over-simulating the brain’s reward circuit. Some drugs like marijuana and heroin have almost similar chemical messengers. However other drugs like cocaine have different chemical structures. Cocaine affects the nerve system in a very adverse way (Drugabuse, 2013, p.1). It has a tendency to stop all messages generated by the brain and use its own chemical messengers to make false perceptions, as a result a person feels high. Drugs have a tendency to increase the tolerance level if consumed regularly, more drugs consumption results in more tolerance which is very bad for physical and mental developments. Addiction to drugs results in lack of decision making, lack of memory, behaviour control and several other unwanted developments (Ncbi, 2006a, p.1). Drugs like Cannabis is widely used by the people of U.K. Cannabis is a plant grown for many purposes, researchers use cannabis plant to make medicines hat cure cancer patients. However the direct consumption of this drug can result in neurological disorders and memory loss. Cultivation of cannabis was not done in Britain previously. This trend came from the European isles. In U.K. drugs have been an illegal way for making money. After arms and petroleum, drugs are the largest money-spinning market in the world. Cocaine, met morphine, heroin, marijuana are some of the drugs widely used among the people in U.K (Reuter, 2007, p.21). Though production of cannabis is legal because of its medicinal advantage and other uses but smoking cannabis along with tobacco is illegal. In the history of America drugs were legal and it was used to build the nation’s economy. In the year 1607, the first English colony contributed huge growth towards the nation’s economy. Americans had a lot of struggles in finding policies to limit the use of drugs. However, the consumption of drugs still persists among youngsters at a large scale. There are many cases for bans that have been implemented on drugs by Supreme Court. Taking consideration of the negative effects of drugs it has been determined to be illegal if found in unauthorized hands. Drugs are chemical substances that can be used for many purposes including production of medicines, which is very important (Indiana, 1996, p.1). Hence there is always availability of drugs however the direct consumption of drugs can be dangerous to life of people hence it has been banned in almost all countries. Drugs used to get high, if caught are an act of penalization as per law. Use of drugs is only permitted to medical science as per law because drugs are the main reason for anti-social activities in the world (World-nuclear. 2014, p.1). Bible does not say directly anything about cigarettes or drugs. But, in Bible it says that our body is a temple of Holy Spirit who resides within us, our soul is from God. It is also mentioned in Bible that a person is not alone, God is always there as his protector and guide. This phrase itself describes that drugs and other illegal substances that can be dangerous to a human body is not acceptable. According to religious perspectives, any kind of drugs including alcohol and cigarettes are unhealthy and they should be kept out of holy places (BBC, 2009, p.1). People who consume drugs are never accepted by God. Though it is not mentioned in Bible but the phrases present in the Bible gives a clear significance against drugs. On the other hand Quran speaks directly against consumption of alcohol and drugs. According to the holy Quran, Alcohol and drugs consumption take a person away from his duty and this in-turn takes the person away from God’s blessings. Alcohol and drugs should never be used because it is a path to hell. Though Quran does not say anything about tobacco which is equally dangerous but it speaks strictly against drugs (Khan, 2011, p.1). Drugs are injurious to health and there have been many death reports by consumption of drugs hence it should be banned so that people can-not avail drugs. As discussed earlier drugs have a tendency to affect the interaction between brain and other part of body resulting nerve problems. Moreover, drugs reduce the power of analysis and it reduces memory (NCBI, 2011b, p.1). It also increases the addiction resulting in consumption of more and more drugs by an individual. These are some common symptoms of drugs moreover drugs lead to lack of sleep, social disturbance and change in the behaviour of a person. These significances ultimately lead to temporary or permanent loss of mind or epilepsy. Because of easy availability of drugs in many places teenagers are more prone to the addiction of drugs. Drugs should be banned so that local peddlers and drug handlers do-not get sufficient chance to sell harmful drugs to make profit. Though it is true that drugs have immense harmful effects if consumed directly but it also has certain positive perspectives. Drugs are required by many pharmaceutical industries to produce medicines that cure illness in people. For example, cannabis is used as a medicine to treat cancer which is better than applying chemotherapy to cancer patients (Cure Your Own Cancer, 2012, p.1). This clearly describes the necessity of drugs in the world. Keeping these factors in mind legal bodies can-not ban drugs completely. Drugs are harmful but it also has certain useful effects that are required for proper living. In a famous book Gray’s Anatomy there is a detailed description which reveals the consequences of banning drugs. It can also happen that banning drugs can lead to war between countries because drugs definitely have many positive impacts that can-not be overridden. Discussion From a detailed report on purity of drugs it has been seen that the purity of drugs has increased over last 20 years and the price of drugs have decreased. This is a result of antinarcotics department which has a little impact on the flow of drugs in market. According to reports, the purity of cocaine between 1990 and 2007 has increased by eleven percent and the price of this drug has decreased by 80 percent (Wells, 2013, p.1). Similar happened with cannabis herb, it has been seen an increase in purity of 161 percent and price has decreased 86 percent. For last 20 years the supply of drugs in market had increased and law enforcements applied to stop illegal supply were failing. Government needs to take positive steps to regulate the supply of drug in order to control the criminal activities by controlling the purity of drugs. Pharmaceutical quality drugs are those drugs, which are used by the pharmaceutical companies to manufacture medicines. These drugs are extremely pure in quality and the composition of these drugs are in such a way that they can be used by the pharmaceutical companies. Many deadly drugs are used by the pharmaceutical companies so that with application of proper components the drugs can be made useful to kill the germs that cause illness. On the other hand, the kitchen made drugs or homemade drugs are referred to those drugs used by an individual to get high. The kitchen made drugs are of no use; it is made in such a way that it can affect the brain cells by disrupting the proper delivery of messages through nervous system. Substances like cannabis, glory seeds and cloves are generally used to make kitchen made drugs to get addicted and high (East Point Police, 2000, p.28). The promotion of drugs in the modern world is done by many ways. In order to make a program popular directors prefer to show use of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes in their shows. Teenagers gain interest towards drugs after watching the shows having a positive feeling about these illegal substances. For an example, “breaking bad” is a show containing 5 seasons; it has been on the television industry for several years. The television show contains many violent stunts and consumption of drugs in a very common way. This show was created by Vince Gillian to show the effects of drug on human beings. Despite of having some positive instances the show is mostly loved by teenagers who are more prone to drugs. Students like to take drugs on a regular basis as the television shows make it very simple. People need to understand the impact of drugs in their body. Drugs might be enjoying while it is taken but its impacts are severe and there have been many death reports and medical casualties as a result of high consumption of drugs. The television shows try to deliver a good moral after every season and it is required but people to understand the purpose of these shows instead of following the same type of life as shown in televisions (Trueman, 2008, p.5). Despite of several initiatives taken by government to limit the usage of drugs by people; drugs are easily available in the local market and used frequently by people. There needs to be proper law and order to minimize the distribution of drugs (Ukdpc, 2012, p.9). There is a possibility that Government can legalize drugs and impose high taxes on them. By applying such remedies the purchasing power of many consumers will go down and they might quit the consumption of drugs. For an example cigarettes and alcohol are legal and there are heavy taxes imposed on them to limit the consumption of cigarettes and alcohol. Similarly drugs can be made legal and taxes can be imposed on them. This might be a positive solution because people are already consuming huge amount of drugs and making it legal will not make a huge difference on it. Moreover availability of drugs in main market with high price might change mind of people. Cigarettes and alcohol are also harmful and there is no point making them legal when drugs are made illegal. There are huge developments going on in modernization in the entire world. The addiction of drugs by people of different culture is a resemblance of this modernization (Stephens, 2008, p.1). Earlier people used alcohol to get high or at fun times, in recent times people use drugs in parties and social get-togethers along with alcohol. Hence government and legal bodies should understand the tendency of the society and act accordingly. There is no point legalizing some harmful substances and not others. If government wants to ban drugs, it is better that alcohol and cigarettes also should be banned because they also cause equal harm in the body and there is no religion in the world that supports alcohol or distinguishes between drugs. Conclusion From the above discussion it is clear that drugs have immense effects in human body. Over consumption or addiction of drugs can lead to serious physical and mental hazards. Drugs have a tendency to deviate thoughts of people by sending inappropriate messages attacking nervous system, this is also known as hallucination. Despite of the ill-factors of drugs; production and sale of drugs can-not be stopped because it is helpful in medicinal science. Drugs are used by pharmaceutical companies to manufacture medicines that can help recovering from illness. Drugs manufacture is important so it will always have its impact on people. Legalizing drugs might be a possibility to reduce its effects in the society. Government can apply high taxes and limit its sale. The purity of drugs can also be reduced; this might help government to control the flow of drugs in the market. People also need to understand that drugs are harmful for body and it is against their religious belief specially Quran. Television producers and media also need to understand the increasing problems associated with distribution of drugs and act accordingly. Media should broadcast such shows that can tempt people to quit drugs. These are the only possible remedies that can control the distribution of drugs and make a society peaceful and healthy for living. References BBC., 2009. Seventh-day Adventists. [Online].
