Applying for a research assistant’s position. Joab Simon 1234 Bane Street, Seville, 91702 (123) 456-7890 jsim@gmail.com April 28, 2014 Dr. John J. Donovan Kent College of Psychology 10940 Willmar Belleview, Suite 1500 Los Angeles, CA 110020 Dear Dr. Donovan: I am writing this paper as an application for the post of a Research assistant as advertised through the College’s Career Service in the Research Department of Psychology. I feel that being part of your undergraduate research team would offer me an ideal opportunity to develop as well as expand my career prospects but to also share the vast experience and knowledge I have acquired in improving your work. I passed with honors my A level Certificate in Organizational Psychology. Through my A Level studies in Organizational Psychology course, I have been furnished me with the knowledge to display acquaintance with theory and research on learning in organizations and group processes, ability to analyze the different need of competence of an organization. That is, identify and emphasis on relevant aspects in the organization, ability to prepare and return the results from research study, and verbally give feedback on other’s research work. I have become familiar with the psychological services sector, its crucial significance to the USA economy and the governing framework it must conform to. I am able to balance these insights with shrewd understanding of the strategic planning, acquisition and improvement of skills by organizations, along with the economic and controlling aspects of labor markets, obtained during my A level studies in Organization Psychology. I have designed and managed projects addressing ability valuation and approach including developing and executing customized assortment systems for approximately all levels of an organization. All of this is bound together by my Psychologist’s analytical rigor, and braced by strong research skills practiced throughout my academic education. In my judgment to be a successful a psychologist, I note with concern that one must have definite personal qualities and strengths; the most important one being emotional stability, something I feel I have in abundance. A solid emotional stability will enable me handle stresses and emotional mayhem that can emanate from communicating with unsettled individuals. As one who is trustworthy, I feel am able to convey and receive critical information effectively, while providing compassion and guarantee to those I communicate with. I am open-minded and tolerant to all categories of people and conditions, a virtue that has hitherto helped me remain more receptive to new research methods, ways of reasoning and thinking. I categorize myself as a very patient person who is capable of conducting a long period of research, and one who recognizes the fact that significant amount of time can elapse before comprehensive results can be seen. As an A level Student, I sought out numerous experiences to apply my theoretical knowledge with reference to approaches to practical and empirical research settings. I had served before in a similar position, but on a study of Work Motivation in a clinical organization under the direction of my Lecturer. My duties included collecting raw data, conducting analyses, generating tables and figures then presenting the results of these findings in a logical format. During one of my study years in college, I designed and applied a proposal in the area of work motivation. As such, I acquired more skills in statistical analysis and interpretation as well as data management. I very much enjoyed the various workshops, the practical classes, research case studies and even though I read more journal articles than I could possibly have imagined, I loved the whole experience. I have wealth of knowledge now about making observations, writing reports, manipulating test materials, thinking rationally and creatively, all of which I strongly feel will enable me to tremendously improve your great work. I am most excited about not only becoming a member of the undergraduate research team but also working for the research team because I see this opportunity as a crucial phase in my development as a professional, a sincerely challenging position and one which will empower me to make a tremendous positive impact with my subsequent work. As an expert now, I anticipate profiting from incorporating my sound knowledge of Psychology management and Finance; I have confidence important insights lie at blending these two areas that can only be brought out by linking oneself with strategic skills scheduling on a macro scale. Based on the fact that Psychology has become a world science and a field for research and practice it therefore means attaining a good psychology degree is the principal step towards becoming an all-round professional psychologist. The Organization Psychology subject, which I label as a hole into the human mind, and my original concern in psychology has always been ignited by your viewpoint especially on work motivation leading to my aspiration to learn and believe that organization is a complex networks of social relationships sandwiched between individuals and within groups. People, and the groups to which they fit, therefore must engage in a range of processes in order to meaningfully blend their actions to yield a product or service. This course has enabled me review and analyze the role of psychological ideas in the way people think, reason and act at work, the changing aspects of interpersonal and group relationships in organizations, and the socio-cultural and contextual processes that may influence individual and group working in organizations. As a psychology student, I have been involved in a variety of undertakings and assignments that enabled me to appreciate the values of psychology in appreciating the world of work. Finally, this course demonstrated to me the positive applications of psychological theories to organizational settings in trying to understand and improve organizational processes and performance with regards to workers, society and their interactions across-culture. With respect to the challenges involved, I expect that the high expectations of the Undergraduate Research team and stakeholders will invigorate me and the people I will be working with to realize our full potential. I am convinced Psychology is slowly progressing from an individualistic viewpoint based on social psychology, sociology and anthropology and I feel that what has not yet been adequately understood is the effect of our culture which I have now worked on for two years. I have learnt that failure to take culture seriously enough stalks from our methods of inquiry, which put larger premium on abstraction that can be measured than on careful clinical observation of organizational sensations, all these my viewpoint put together will help the research team recognize how much our methods and theories are a creation of our own culture and that in itself will add great value and ingredient to your good work. Nonetheless, I find that to contribute to the efficiency, good governance, quality of service and progress of the psychology sector, I will need to provide service to society in a manner that we can both be proud of. I aspire to bring into the position of Research assistant what I have sincerely and aggressively gained in my academic work and internship years. Some of which include robust the ability to create and develop relations, recognize information needs of the multiple shareholders and serve them single-mindedly to the best standard. I also have the capacity to stay updated on issues through a structured and continuous research. Currently, I am learning the details of corporate institutions. I have also taken numerous communications and coaxing courses which will assist me to work efficiently on Research project along with the clients. I love using computers and have extensive experience with basic computer analysis and application software. I also like to be challenged, to work hard, and to prosper; I have further supplemented my education with a range of summer employment and internships. Through these involvements, I managed to foster my originality and improve my analytical capabilities in both employment and academics. My other internship involvement afforded me the opportunity to work with Base research groups in a work rehabilitation program. I supported several individuals in developing practical problem solving skills for complications that arise in the work setting of any organizational structured set up. Bi-weekly meetings with my manager improved and simplified my knowledge of the tussles these individuals experience. For many years while I followed your research work and findings, I have read with great interest your most recent papers on work motivation including, your review of the six dominant theories of Work Motivation in an organizational culture, the tools and methodologies used, discussions and results of most research which if can be combined with my theoretical and practical oriented preparation, my broad-based research experience in, organizational psychology, cognition, and my exposure to organization culture made me a perfect fit for the internship position and that even has further amplified my interest in developing my understanding of industrial organizational culture, particularly with regards to work motivation which I feel you and your research team will provide. Away from my studies I have had vast relevant work experience. This included my recent time of working with a mental health facility as a volunteer. Whilst there, I gained experience working with the patients who suffered from mental health problems within a social care, clinical, and educational setting. I was part of a multi-disciplinary team that evaluated patients who suffered from depression, schizophrenia, addictive behaviors, neurological disorders, challenging behaviors and ingestion disorders. Due to this experience, I emerged with a better understanding of the regulation and guidelines that govern the career and their implications for clinical practice. On completion my degree I am planning on working in the public sector for quite some of years, preferably in an area of adult psychopathology with the sole view and objective of giving back to the community. As a highly inspired in person, I can guarantee you that I will endeavor to play an active and positive role with your Research Team, for I feel that my abilities and interests will help me to succeed while with the you and your team. It is my honest faith that the facts I have given will persuade you to contemplate on my application the Research Assistant Position. Finally, I will be in touch with you soon to discuss my prospects with the Research team, obtain more information about your research work and to discuss further my qualifications for this position. Please feel free to contact me. Yours Sincerely, Joab Simon. Reference Jex, S. M., & Britt, T. W. (2008). Organizational psychology: A scientist-practitioner approach.
