Human Development Human Development: Adolescent Stage Human development is the process of broadening the freedoms of the people and opportunities in order to improve their wellbeing. It deals with the freedom that people have in making decisions pertaining to life. The transition period from the late childhood to adulthood is called adolescence (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2013). Adolescence is a challenging stage of human development mainly characterised by unique physical, social and emotional changes.

Adolescence commences with the onset of puberty between the age of about 12 and 20 years although it may extend into the early adulthood. Puberty is a characterized by the maturation of the reproductive system and is usually marked by an upsurge of sex hormones production (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2013). Physical changes are marked by growth of pubic hairs, broadening of the shoulders and deepening of the voice in males. Conversely, growth of breasts, broadening of hips and commencement of periods marks the beginning of puberty in females.

Socially, adolescence is a tumulus stage that requires the solving of challenges of for example ego vs. identity. With the increased possibility of succumbing to peer pressure, human beings at this stage of development must tackle the aforementioned life crisis knowing themselves and their meaning.Gender identity and differences in behaviour and mental process continue to develop will into adolescence. Gender identity develops at an early stage of 3 years after which the children adapts to the behaviour and roles of the specific gender (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2013).

Adolescents usually have a stable sense of identity and feel psychologically integrated into the society. Moreover, teenagers normally have a balanced view of the world pertaining their fantasies, aspirations and reality. In conclusion, adolescence is a very critical stage in human development and therefore those in the stage should be assisted to comprehend the changes and challenges within adolescent stage.ReferenceKail, R.
