Effects of short and Long-term memory Memory is a structure that stores and retrieves subsequent vast information. Memory is a vital to all our lives and without the memory, people cannot remember the past, present, and the future will be affected without it, as one cannot learn anything. Memory is divided into two namely the short and the long-term memory. Short-term memory is referred to as a speedily decaying system hence temporary changes occur in this case. Physiology nature of the traces proved that events in the short-term memory fade quickly.

Conversely, long-term appears to be permanent. In addition, memory has a more enduring impression on the brain. Short-term memory has a limited storage capacity that is hard to overload. However, in the long time memory, all information is transferred from short to long time memory hence permanently stored (Gathercole 194). Different sides of the brain affect the manner that the memory receives storage. For instance, the frontal lobe of the cerebral context handles the short-term memory. The information stored in the long-term memory first moves the stimuli to the hippocampus and then transferred the cerebral cortex for permanent storage.

Broadbent’s theory explains that there is a device located in the incoming sensory register and the short-term memory storage. According to the physiologist, this filter functions together with a buffer that enables a character to differentiate a stimulus simultaneously. One stimulus is sent as the other waits for processing. In the short term memory, the processing unit from the short-term memory to the processing unit was confirmed to have a number of drawbacks as only a small number of items could be held in the memory at the same time, and new happening causes old activation to fade.

Broadbent recommended for rehearsal for short-term memory individuals to capture the small number of items and store them permanently in their memory.Work CitedGathercole, Sebastian, Models of Short-term Memory. New York: Cengage Learning, 2009. Print.
