The American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles

Based on the teleological system, ethics is primarily characterized by a focus on the consequence, which an action holds. This view holds that for people to make the correct moral choices, they have to understand the results of their choices (APS 2005). Choices ought to be made under the influence of a correct consequence and thus the action is considered moral. However, when a choice made results in an incorrect consequence, the action is considered immoral. In this account, a teleological ethical standard from the America Psychological Association organization involves of beneficence and non-maleficence in which psychologists strive to benefit those whom they take care of without doing them any harm. They have an obligation to safeguard the welfare and rights of those they administer.

On the other hand, deontological ethics primarily dwells on the observance of independent moral rules and duties. When one abides by his duties, he is perceived to behave morally. The APA instills the art of integrity in psychologists, in which they are required to promote accuracy, honesty, and truthfulness at all times. Even when a situation calls for the deception that would justify the means and minimize harm, they still are expected to consider the possible consequences of their actions (APS 2005). These factors fit well into ethical theories because they stand as viewpoints from which guidance can be obtained in making decisions.

The difference between the teleological and deontological ethical structures is that the former is based on the outcome of an action. Teleological ethics considers good as an action that denotes a right or wrong action provided the result is good (APS2005). The deontological ethical system deals more with the motive of doing a good deed that may turn out to be bad. The deontology system is based on the act itself.
