Some scholarly works argue that people differing from one another is a natural phenomenon which is obvious. This argument is not clear because it requires an individual differences study. This includes studying variance among individuals, study central tendency which will describe people from an overall within-person average. In addition, genetic codes of people are studied to reveal sexual, ethnic, cultural and social differences (Funder, 2001). Cognitive abilities, emotional reactivity and interpersonal styles are yet other important components studied under individual differences. Some of the methods which study these aspects range from laboratory experiments, data reduction techniques like factor analysis and longitudinal field studies. Individual differences of reliability and stability are the most important measurement issues (Funder, 2001). Generally, individual differences will address three questions which are development of adequate descriptive taxonomy of how people differ, test of theoretical explanations of the dynamics and structures of individual differences and application of differences in a situation to predict differences arising in other situations.
This factor has categorised the infinite ways in which people differ in terms of a limited number of dormant constructs. This involves a multi-step, cyclical process of intuition, inductions and deductions, verification which is gradually converged on consensual descriptive organisation of broad classes of variables and methods used to analyse them. Most taxonomic techniques and measurements used in fields are developed to respond to demand for schooling selection, business applications and trainings (Funder, 2001).
