Chan and Wan's empirical study support the negative significance of stress, such as that of PTSD, on employees’ performance to identify the need for motivation as a strategy for improving output level (2012). However, motivation has not indicated significant positive results on the productivity of the patients. According to Johnston and Lee, motivational factors only boost mental health, temporarily, but not psychological health and emotions (2013).

While literature identifies the negative significance of PTSD on employees’ productivity and therefore notes the need for motivation to improve output, it undermines the possible effectiveness of motivational factors on the patients. This study seeks to investigate possible associations between PTSD and work-related motivation through the following research questions.

• Does work-related motivation improve symptoms of PTSD?
• Does work-related motivation improve self-concept and attitude towards the environment among patients of PTSD?

Research design
Phenomenology is the most suitable research design for exploring the research questions. The design involves data collection and analysis on people’s experiences with a phenomenon and will in this case focus on experience from role of motivation on patients with PTSD. People living with PTSD will be the study’s research participants. Case study design is the best alternative to the study as it applies different strategies to data collection, including strategies that focus on experiences. The need for in-depth information however prefers phenomenology because case study design is often restrictive in scope, considering a single person or entity, and may not offer sufficient data (Creswell, 2011).
