Family therapy is a relatively recent advancement in the field of psychotherapy, which was witnessed by doctors while they were treating schizophrenic patients after they noticed that the patient’s family communicated in disturbed ways (Corsini, 2011). Moreover, close examination revealed that the symptoms of the patient rose and fell about the way his parents communicated. Hence, a need to handle the family as a whole arose.

To date, this therapy has increasingly helped thousands of families to live harmoniously, especially with two further developments being initiated. These developments include couple therapy which entails treating relationships between marriage partners, and the expansion of family therapy to other groups that are similar to families including religious communities. The purpose of family therapy as recommended by doctors is to ensure that society becomes sensitive to diverse family norms and relationships beliefs and cultures that have been brought about by the changes experienced in society (Corsini, 2011).

Family therapy should be considerate and inclusive of all needs of each member of the family plus other key relationships in the lives of other people. Moreover, it should ensure that people talk together or individually often concerning issues that are complex and stressful, in ways that respect their experiences, invite commitment and hold up recovery. This ensures that people work in partnership with their families and members of their families. Through this, there are recognition, building strengths, and relational resources for people (Corsini, 2011).

Several reasons can lead to family therapy, especially in modern society where families have been torn apart due to social and economic factors. The importance of the family continues to grow with the changing world. For instance, family therapy is imperative to newly blended families that have children from previous marriages, and /or have both biological and adopted children. In these kinds of scenarios, marriage and family therapists can help parents and children from these families to talk through the important issues and make them know and understand the required skills in developing a healthy supportive relationship.

Another instance that is related to family therapy is trauma where children undergo a stressful experience in their lives such as being sexually abused by members of their families where parents rape their children (Corsini, 2011). Such situations must be handled by therapists on individual bases where the said victims are put through continuous therapy which entails giving them time to let out the bitter /mixed feelings they have within them and being taught the skills that enable them to be able to recode with their families and society as a whole.

Regarding the importance of families, therapies should be taken into consideration to ensure that members of the families can understand each other in terms of their needs and situations.
