Coping Strategies Sur Coping Strategies There are various methods for coping with stress. This paper, however, deals with only four of them; namely, problem solving skills, improved communication skills, being close to people in one’s life, and being flexible.
The problem solving method of dealing with stress involves coming up with positive ways to resolve a problem. This involves not ignoring recurring problems in the hope that they will disappear and thereby let stress build up and fester. Good communication skills are virtually indispensable to having a low level of stress. People must always be mindful that, with the best of intentions, there are numerous ways in which communication can provoke conflict. Our body language and tone of voice and tone of email may result in a message being misunderstood by its receiver. Writing ability that requires the reader to “read between the lines” may result in the receiver getting a different message than was the intention of the sender. Individuals who have people close to them in their lives have a lower stress level than those who do not. However, to keep them close, resolve conflicts and solve problems instead of keeping them inside of you. Finally, “being too rigid or stubborn causes conflict, problems, and ultimately stress” (Methods for Coping with Stress, 2007). This student tries to use all four of these methods, especially the first two aforementioned ones. For example, unless problems are brought into the open, others may not even realize a problem exists. This student needs to be closer to people to reduce stress.
